Diary of Unknown Symptoms

Mystery of the Internal Vibration

Entry for August 10, 2005

EGGS IN MY STOOL!!!! AGAIN!!!

A few days ago I noticed the little tiny tapeworm eggs in my stool. Holy cow…I thought we killed it!! A closer inspection this time and boy do I feel stupid. They look like watermelon seeds and yes I had watermelon yesterday. That is probably what it was the first time too.

I’m such an idiot.

Back to my regular doctor for the ultrasound results. Feeling slightly embarrassed about the tapeworm fiasco I tell him the Praziquantel had no effect and I mention the watermelon seeds.

I still have all of the weird symptoms. I feel tired and weak all of the time, don’t feel hungry, my muscles feel stiff, weird pressure pokes in my chest, head pinching with a flush sensation, a light tingling that feels like nerve endings and of course the internal vibrations.

I’ve lost even more weight now so he decides to look further and refers me to a gastro specialist.

I thought it was weird that he was sending me to a gastro doctor when my main consistant symptom was an internal vibration. Wouldn’t it make more sense to send me to a Neurologist? I guess he figures there is something in my intestines causing the vibrations. Who cares, at least it’s a specialist.

He said he would have the ultrasound results in another week. The receptionist made the specialist appointment for Sept 12th. Another month away! Oh well, at least I can follow up on Friday with the Naturopath.

Two days after killing the worm and I’m still vibrating and I’m feeling bloated again. Back to Google to see how longs it takes to kill the worm and if there are side effects.

Well, the medication is supposed to work immediately and feeling bloated is a known side effect of Praziquantel.

In my googling, I turn up a web site that mentions a natural way to cleanse your intestines from tapeworms. At this point I’m thinking maybe the variation of my tapeworm is immune to Praziquantel. The site mentioned a three day diet of eating only pineapples.

Here’s what it says:

The pineapple fast is excellent for anyone with any sort of intestinal worm, since the enzyme Bromelin, promenent in pineapple, destroys tapeworms and most other worms. It even destroys worm larvae, before they can hatch.

Great! Let’s try something natural. Tomorrow is the start of a long weekend so this is perfect timing. I’ll start my food diary again to record the progress.

Ernie is alive and well…

Morning of the ultrasound and I’ve followed the prep instructions and drank two litres of water. Part of the prep work is not going to the washroom before the ultrasound. Unfortunately for me it’s raining…

I leave the house and I’m uncomfortable because I need to go but I figure I can wait until my appointment. Onto the 401 westbound.

Around Pickering I’m starting to get really uncomfortable with stomach pains. These are not my regular symptoms… I HAVE TO GO TO THE WASHROOM!!

By the time I get to Morningside, I can barely drive. I HAVE TO GO NOW!! The pain is now unbearable so I decide to pull over at the Markham Road exit.

Pulling into the industrial section area of Milner Ave I drive around the back of one unit and find a dark corner and I’m standing there in the rain. I sure hope the ultrasound people don’t notice!

I get to the office and they start the ultrasound. Because of the positions the technician put me in, I couldn’t get a good clear view of the screen. I wanted to see the worm! After about thirty minutes it was over. I asked the technician if she saw anything good and she said they weren’t allowed to discuss the results. DAMN! I’ll have to wait until I see the doctor.

Down in the lobby, I take the pill to kill the worm once and for all. It’s over.

The doctor walks into the room with the results from my stool sample. Everything was normal. IMPOSSIBLE… I’VE SEEN THE EGGS!!

Explained the tapeworm theory to the doctor and because of the timeline with the cats, he agrees that I’m probably right. Tomorrow is the ultrasound and he said to have it done anyway. He checks my weight and I’ve lost another five pounds.

He flips through a couple of his medical books looking for the medication for a tapeworm. He then percribes a drug called Praziquantel. Yes that’s the one I tell him!! I reconize the unusual name from my googling.

I go straight to the pharmacy in his building and after I drop off the prescription and I wait around for about 10-15 minutes. The pharmacist calls me over and says they don’t have the medication and that she’d have to order it. No thanks, I want this today! My work is close to a Shopper’s Drug Mart so I’ll try there when I get to work.

I get to Shoppers and drop off my perscription. The pharmacist tells me the same thing but they could have it by the afternoon. Great, I’ll pick it up after work.

Because I ‘m having the ultrasound tomorrow, I didn’t want to kill the worm before I had some evidence that it actually existed. I’ll take it after my appointment.

Eggs in my stool!! Eggs in my stool!!

I couldn’t believe it. After checking for the eggs for the past few days, I finally found them. Holy cow! They look exactly like it said on the web sites. They look like little tiny seeds. I was so excited, I called my wife in to have a look and get her opinion. We both agreed it was eggs and the suspected tapeworm was all but confirmed.

The unfortunate thing was in the excitement of the moment, I flushed it away. My knew my appointment with the doctor was next Tuesday so I’d better get a sample and drop it off to the lab right away.

The following morning I managed to get a sample into the specimen bag and I wasn’t sure but I thought it contained one of the eggs. I dropped it off at the lab on the way to work.

Made the appointment for the ultrasound. The earliest I could have it done was July 27th.

I also wanted to figure out the time-line for the tapeworms. We figured it was March 1st as the date we treated both of our cats for fleas. They are both indoor cats so we figured they must have gotten it from the previous owner of the house. They had a cat and dog and both were outdoor pets. It wasn’t until March 28th that we realized they had tapeworms.

I checked into the first walk in clinic on May 12th and I had already been vibrating for a couple of weeks so this made perfect sense!

The people at work knew I was having a lot of doctor appointments so I thought I should tell them what was going on. I told them the time-line history and how I thought I had a tapeworm. I named the problem “Ernie” as a code word at work. I didn’t want people yelling “HOW’S THE TAPEWORM?!!” So every now and again they’d say “How’s Ernie?” in casual conversation and that sounded much better.

With my suspicion of a tapeworm, I figure I should go back to the doctor as soon as I can to let him know of this new development and maybe start looking for eggs in my stool.

Made my next appointment for July 26th.

Dipylidium Caninum

Searching Google my wife found a web site that said the human infection of tapeworms can effect the nervous system and that the symptoms are mostly asymptomatic. This is too familiar as all of my symptoms are very mild and very vague. That would explain why the doctor couldn’t find anything wrong!

Pathology and clinical symptoms: Most infected persons are asymptomatic. Severe infection may cause indigestion, abdominal pain, diarrhea, anal pruritus, and nervous symptoms.

Diagnosis: Diagnosis depends on the recovery and identification of gravid proglottids or egg-balls in the stool.

Egg-balls in the stool? This should make the sample really interesting! My wife is now six months pregnant with our baby and I’m two months carrying a tapeworm.

Talk about sympathy pregnancy… Holy Cow!

My follow up appointment with the doctor.

Told him about the pears having the greatest effect and showed him my food diary report. Explained about these weird symptoms. The facial pinching, the flushes, mild abdominal pains, the frequent bowel movements and loss of appetite. I’ve now lost eight pounds since my last appointment.

He suspected I might have some kind of bowel irritation like Colitis or even Crohn’s disease. He really seemed to think my problem was related to the intestinal tract, due to the bloating and how my diet appeared to effect the symptoms.

He ordered a stool sample and abdominal ultrasound.

I mentioned all of this to my wife who just so happens to have Crohn’s disease. I’ve known my wife for eight years and I am somewhat familiar of the weird symptoms associated with Crohn’s and we both agreed it didn’t sound like Crohns.

As we were disussing this my wife looked at me with this shocked look on her face. She reminded me that we treated our cats for a tapeworm infection a few months back… The doctor ordered a stool sample to look for PARASITES!!!

Back to Google I go looking for the symptoms of a tapeworm infection in humans…
