Mystery of the Internal Vibration

Entry for March 29, 2007

Woke up this morning with a really stiff back. So did the Ion Foot Bath have any effect? Nope, not really. In fact, in some ways, I feel worse. I had a really hard time getting to sleep last night and usually I have no problem at all. The vibration seems to be back although it would start and stop again. I wonder if it had any effect on the minerals like copper, zinc and magnesium?

Not really sure if that was progress or not? I also had cold hands this morning and I haven’t had that in a while and I haven’t made any changes to my supplements. More energy? Nope.

Despite all of this, I did make one discovery this morning. I realized what was causing the green stools. A while back I started eating granny smith apples instead of fuji apples because they don’t contain as much sugar.

Today I woke up and I wasn’t vibrating. Just as I got up out of bed, I had this weird upper chest pain. It was actually more like tightness and it was only in the upper left side of my chest. It was very weird so I took two magnesium and 12.5 of zinc along with my multivitamin. It’s the one that contains 0.5 of copper but I want to see if it makes any difference. It seemed to disappear after I took my vitamins but it was very weird.

I had two bowel movements during the morning and they were both green in color. In fact, I’ve noticed the green stools over the past two days. Usually this can happen when I have some wheatgrass but I haven’t had any lately.

All day my legs feel very heavy and I just have this overall lethargic feeling. I took another 12.5 of zinc at night along with one magnesium and off to an early bed.

The doctor walks into the room with the results from my stool sample. Everything was normal. IMPOSSIBLE… I’VE SEEN THE EGGS!!

Explained the tapeworm theory to the doctor and because of the timeline with the cats, he agrees that I’m probably right. Tomorrow is the ultrasound and he said to have it done anyway. He checks my weight and I’ve lost another five pounds.

He flips through a couple of his medical books looking for the medication for a tapeworm. He then percribes a drug called Praziquantel. Yes that’s the one I tell him!! I reconize the unusual name from my googling.

I go straight to the pharmacy in his building and after I drop off the prescription and I wait around for about 10-15 minutes. The pharmacist calls me over and says they don’t have the medication and that she’d have to order it. No thanks, I want this today! My work is close to a Shopper’s Drug Mart so I’ll try there when I get to work.

I get to Shoppers and drop off my perscription. The pharmacist tells me the same thing but they could have it by the afternoon. Great, I’ll pick it up after work.

Because I ‘m having the ultrasound tomorrow, I didn’t want to kill the worm before I had some evidence that it actually existed. I’ll take it after my appointment.

Eggs in my stool!! Eggs in my stool!!

I couldn’t believe it. After checking for the eggs for the past few days, I finally found them. Holy cow! They look exactly like it said on the web sites. They look like little tiny seeds. I was so excited, I called my wife in to have a look and get her opinion. We both agreed it was eggs and the suspected tapeworm was all but confirmed.

The unfortunate thing was in the excitement of the moment, I flushed it away. My knew my appointment with the doctor was next Tuesday so I’d better get a sample and drop it off to the lab right away.

The following morning I managed to get a sample into the specimen bag and I wasn’t sure but I thought it contained one of the eggs. I dropped it off at the lab on the way to work.

Made the appointment for the ultrasound. The earliest I could have it done was July 27th.

I also wanted to figure out the time-line for the tapeworms. We figured it was March 1st as the date we treated both of our cats for fleas. They are both indoor cats so we figured they must have gotten it from the previous owner of the house. They had a cat and dog and both were outdoor pets. It wasn’t until March 28th that we realized they had tapeworms.

I checked into the first walk in clinic on May 12th and I had already been vibrating for a couple of weeks so this made perfect sense!

The people at work knew I was having a lot of doctor appointments so I thought I should tell them what was going on. I told them the time-line history and how I thought I had a tapeworm. I named the problem “Ernie” as a code word at work. I didn’t want people yelling “HOW’S THE TAPEWORM?!!” So every now and again they’d say “How’s Ernie?” in casual conversation and that sounded much better.

With my suspicion of a tapeworm, I figure I should go back to the doctor as soon as I can to let him know of this new development and maybe start looking for eggs in my stool.

Made my next appointment for July 26th.

Dipylidium Caninum

Searching Google my wife found a web site that said the human infection of tapeworms can effect the nervous system and that the symptoms are mostly asymptomatic. This is too familiar as all of my symptoms are very mild and very vague. That would explain why the doctor couldn’t find anything wrong!

Pathology and clinical symptoms: Most infected persons are asymptomatic. Severe infection may cause indigestion, abdominal pain, diarrhea, anal pruritus, and nervous symptoms.

Diagnosis: Diagnosis depends on the recovery and identification of gravid proglottids or egg-balls in the stool.

Egg-balls in the stool? This should make the sample really interesting! My wife is now six months pregnant with our baby and I’m two months carrying a tapeworm.

Talk about sympathy pregnancy… Holy Cow!

My follow up appointment with the doctor.

Told him about the pears having the greatest effect and showed him my food diary report. Explained about these weird symptoms. The facial pinching, the flushes, mild abdominal pains, the frequent bowel movements and loss of appetite. I’ve now lost eight pounds since my last appointment.

He suspected I might have some kind of bowel irritation like Colitis or even Crohn’s disease. He really seemed to think my problem was related to the intestinal tract, due to the bloating and how my diet appeared to effect the symptoms.

He ordered a stool sample and abdominal ultrasound.

I mentioned all of this to my wife who just so happens to have Crohn’s disease. I’ve known my wife for eight years and I am somewhat familiar of the weird symptoms associated with Crohn’s and we both agreed it didn’t sound like Crohns.

As we were disussing this my wife looked at me with this shocked look on her face. She reminded me that we treated our cats for a tapeworm infection a few months back… The doctor ordered a stool sample to look for PARASITES!!!

Back to Google I go looking for the symptoms of a tapeworm infection in humans…

It’s been three weeks now of eating fruit. Bananas made me feel ill, peaches had no effect and the pears? We had a winner. When I ate two to three pears a day, the vibrations stopped. Unbelievable!

Around this time I started to have other symptoms.  I started having very weird pinching in my facial area and sometimes it was followed by a flush. Nothing dramatic, just one pinch and then nothing.  I also had this weird feeling in the top of my head that felt like my nerve endings were twitching very lightly.

I also started to notice that certain foods made me feel sick and I would feel bloated for a short time and then I’d feel fine the next day or after a warm bath.

Another weird symptom I noticed was that I would have three and four bowel movements a day. No diarrhea and no blood in the stool but it appeared very small in size. Nothing painful and at the time I hardly thought it was problem because it didn’t really effect by day to day activities.

Being a programmer, I built a simple database as a food diary to track the foods I ate, when I ate them, how I felt and the frequency of my bowel movements.
