Zinc-Sulfur-1

Chart: High dosage of Zinc (Zn) can lower Sulfur (S).

Another supplement and another home run. I starting taking MSM yesterday and I notice a big improvement with my candida. I looked up the mineral relationships chart and the answer hit me like a ton of bricks. The obvious answer is Zinc (Zn). From February 2007 until August 2007 I took high dosages of zinc and went too far and pushed my copper level too low. I think the high intake of zinc also lowered the level of sulfur (S) and based on the interrelationships, high zinc could’ve also lowered my potassium and iron.

I’m just glad I found another deficiency except this one may have been caused by me…

A couple of days of Rutin and I’m not feeling the effects anymore. I’ve switched to taking calcium/magnesium three times a day over the past few days and I’m feeling a lot better. I’m guessing it’s because of the effect on the potassium but I can’t say for sure, I just know I’m feeling so much better.

Weird feeling on the way into work and once again it was fixed by taking calcium/magnesium. Is my potassium still too high??? I wonder if calcium actually lowers the potassium or just prevents it from going higher?

In addition to medical situations that can lead to hyperkalemia, cellular potassium covers aspects of bladder functions, as well as right-sided ovarian and testicular properties. Cellular zinc covers aspects of prostate / uterine functions, and left-sided ovarian and testicular properties. Elevated potassium is invariably found with acute or chronic Cystitis (bladder infections) or right-sided Ovarian cysts (but not dermoid or chocolate cysts), whereby right-sided ovarian and/or testicular Cancer will always result in excessively high potassium levels, which can also serve as a high risk indicator to be suggestive of a pelvic scan.

Interesting how high potassium levels are linked to testicular cancer. Interesting because Lance Armstrong was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Someone who would lose quite a bit of sodium from sweating all the time.

Lance Armstrong won a world title in bicycle racing before his first full season as a professional. At 25, he won the World Championships, the Tour Du Pont and multiple Tour de France.

Then he found out in 1996 he had testicular cancer. His cancer then spread throughout his stomach, lungs and brain. If cancer is testicular cancer is discovered early, a man is usually given a 70% chance of survival. Because, Armstrong says he ignored warning signals, his chances of survival dropped as low as 40%.

Armstrong said in an interview in the Testicular Cancer Resource Center, he remembered thinking, “Oh my God, I’m going to die!”

“It just got so painful, I couldn’t sit on my bike anymore,” Armstrong remembered in the interview. He even coughed up blood once. “I thought if I coughed up a little blood, and if I don’t do it tommorrow, then it must not be so bad.” Armstrong didn’t give up and this year he won the Tour de France race for the second year in a row–the major race in the world for bicyclists. The race lasts 2,274 miles over , 23 day test of stamina and courage.

Armstrong got to that point by not giving up. He said he declared himself a cancer survivor, not a cancer victim. He had chemotherapy and surgury. He had a physical treatment program , a competitive spirit and a support system. He was declared cancer free.

“In 1996, two months before I was diagnosed, the illness was raging,” Armstrong said in an interview with Associated Press. He says thirty years ago, 95 percent of those who had testicular cancer died, but today 95 percent survive. “In 2000, I’m not much of a miracle,” he explained “Thirty years ago, yes it would have been a miracle.”

Armstrong also wants to help others. In 1996, he founded the Lance Armstrong Foundation. The organization provides grants and partnerships to institutions and organizations to help fight cancer. It also is active in public education about the disease.

In 1995 he established the Lance Armstrong Junior Series to promote the sport among youth. Armstrong may be a good model to young people, both for his accomplishments as an athlete and his successful fight against cancer.

I added the licorice root back for my cough yesterday and boy what a difference. It can really suppress the deep kind of cough that irriates the throat.

In fact, there’s a woman at work who also has a really bad cough and we work together so either I gave it to her or vice versa. Anyway, she was coughing constantly from the moment she came into work. I kind of wondered why she came in at all… I don’t like pushing things on people but I told her about licorice root and how fast it worked for coughing. She was willing to give it a try and she stopped coughing within minutes. She was amazed and another co-worker asked me what I gave her because she couldn’t believe how fast it worked!

Two days of 1000-1200 mg of calcium/magnesium in a 2/1 ratio and I feel much better.

In my book of nutritional healing is says not to use licorice root for more than seven days in a row because it can cause high blood pressure, water retention and low potassium levels. I’ve been taking it here and there for two weeks now so I’ll stop taking it and see what effect it has. A couple of web sites suggest 4-6 weeks and then a break. One week and 4-6 weeks is a huge difference!

When licorice root is taken daily, it is recommended that the dose does not exceed 3 grams. Use for 4-6 weeks, and have 1-2 weeks break. If taking licorice in large doses be sensitive to any of the following adverse reactions and symptoms: puffy ankles, facial swelling, shortness of breath, headaches, and general weakness. Be aware some people can be quite sensitive with any herb or drug and may have adverse reactions.

Entry for February 25, 2008

Tightness in my chest again today after lunch disappeared with magnesium and not calcium. Fighting with cold hands all day which is weird because I’m still talking the lecithin. Weird.

I’m now beginning to think that the recent issues have been caused by magnesium loss because of the licorice root getting rid of the potassium. Ended up taking 1000 mg of magnesium today which is way more than I’ve taken in a long, long time.

After lunch had a weird chest feeling. I had one magnesium in the morning and one lecithin at lunch. I have a hunch that my potassium is still high based on the cracks on my tongue so I take a calcium/magnesium and it goes away almost instantly. Was it the calcium working against the potassium?

Something is not right. I took calcium/magnesium along with licorice along with some extra magnesium before I left for work and I have that little chest pinch again. So is the potassium too high or not? Maybe it’s possible that I’m losing magnesium along with the loss of potassium??? I’m not really sure…

I have a feeling that my potassium is still very high and here’s something that would certainly suggest that they are.

Adrenals and high Potassium

When the adrenals become fatigued and unable to release adequate amounts of aldosterone or cortisol, potassium levels rise, sodium and blood sugar levels fall, body fluid volume decreases and hypotension and dehydration can result.

In theory, because of the known effects of licorice, there may be some benefits of licorice for high potassium levels caused by a condition called hypoaldosteronism. There is early evidence in humans in support of this use. However, research is preliminary and a qualified health care provider should supervise treatment.

I’ll add calcium and licorice root and see if that makes any difference.

Off to the Naturopath with my notes in hand. I’m expecting a lot and hoping for a miracle but I’m doubtful at the same time. I just want to put an end to this once and for all.

I explained my main reason for the appointment and that my hunch is that my potassium has gone too high because of multiple doses of arginine. Then, we spend a long time reviewing the notes on an item by item basis. I give her a date and a comment description and she’ll ask the occasional question and take her own notes. Understandably, this took a bit of time and we went through everything. I ended the summary by indicating my interest in amino acids and the possibility of a deficiency test. I also told her about a book I was reading called “The Edge Effect” by Dr.  Eric Braverman. Such a brilliant book but sadly, she had never heard of it.

The second part of the appointment was a medical exam. She had me sit down on the examination chair and she did a number of standard things and was very, very professional and even did the Chinese pulse diagnosis! She was very thorough when listening to my heart. I was very interested to know if she could hear the mitral valve prolapse (Also called Right Branch Bundle Block.) She said she could hear it but it was very faint.

She would do some research regarding the treatment of high potassium levels and get me with a price for the amino acid test. I like her. She seems to listen and is okay following my direction. I’m very interested in the amino acid test, if it’s accurate.

Three days at the new job and I love it here. People are great and I love the fact that I work in the middle of a forest. No longer troubled with the hassles of the transit commute or the traffic congestion in the downtown core. And now that I’m into my new job, I’d really like to get my symptoms under control. I did a little research about how chromium can reduce potassium and copper levels in the body and I know I have some around so I take some in the morning with breakfast.

Chromium & Potassium

Magnesium levels frequently go up following long-term supplementation of chromium because of its synergism with chromium, and also because of potassium (which is a magnesium antagonist) going down, and thus not exerting an inhibiting effect on magnesium any longer.
 
Chromium is the “Gold Standard” to help normalize elevated copper, since it is its associated trace element. More aches and pains, arthritis, slow-healing fractures, sciatica and other back problems, various infections, etc, can be relieved with chelated chromium (not GTF), than with many other supplements – provided they conform to the side-specific requirements (see introduction above), provided that calcium and magnesium are close to normal, since they are also involved with various disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and provided that potassium levels are not below normal, since chromium is a potent potassium antagonist.

When supplementing chromium, its level will generally not increase at first, but instead it will gradually lower copper, and in the example below, potassium, since they are high in ratio to chromium.  Only after copper and potassium have been reduced to normal levels, chromium may at that point start to go up.  However, since sufficient amounts of chromium are rarely used, in practice, copper and potassium just come down closer to normal, and chromium levels stay the same.

I end up having cold hands all morning so is it because of the stress of the new job or because I took one dose of Chromium? Or something else?

I start calling around looking for a naturopathic doctor and I found someone local who has an opening for tomorrow. Fantastic!! I’ll have to gather all of my notes and be sure to include a brief overview of my health history and that could take a while but I want to make sure I get it right this time.

Yesterday I reduced my potassium to half a capsule (49.5 mg) and I’ll so the same thing today.

On my way into work I was sitting on the train and I had the chest pain again so I took the homeopathic magnesium and it had no effect. Luckily in my little vitamin pack I carry around I have my other magnesium (250 mg) and again it had no effect. Now I’m starting to get a little worried, if magnesium doesn’t help what will?

I looked through my vitamin pack again and I have a Calcium/Magnesium with me and I’m not really comfortable that the problem is over so I take one of those too. I managed to make it to work without any more problem so why did the calcium have an effect when the magnesium did not? It doesn’t make any sense. I unlock my computer and start quickly googling away…

Within minutes I find exactly what I am looking for. Hyperkalemia….and one of the listed causes is high dosages of Arginine and one of the listed treatments? Calcium.

Calcium

Calcium is one of the first treatment options for a high potassium level. If you are suffering from irregular heart beats, the doctor will give you intravenous calcium to help protect your heart and muscles. Calcium will only be effective for an hour, so other treatments will begin immediately.

And something else I found:

Arginine and lysine amino acids enter the muscle cell in exchange for potassium, thereby leading to an increase in extracellular potassium.

Potassium & Arginine side effects and warnings

Arginine has been well tolerated by most people in studies lasting for up to six months, although there is a possibility of serious side effects in some people. Stomach discomfort, including nausea, stomach cramps, or an increased number of stools, may occur. People with asthma may experience a worsening of symptoms, which may be related to allergy, if arginine is inhaled.

Other potential side effects include low blood pressure and changes in numerous chemicals and electrolytes in the blood.

Examples include high potassium, high chloride, low sodium, low phosphate, high blood urea nitrogen, and high creatinine levels.

People with liver or kidney diseases may be especially sensitive to these complications and should avoid using arginine except under medical supervision. After injections of arginine, low back pain, flushing, headache, numbness, restless legs, venous irritation, and death of surrounding tissues have been reported.

And other thing that is starting to make sense… A while ago I was researching the cracks on my tongue and it was either the spleen or the stomach as they are both in the same area. (Entry for September 18, 2007) I figured it to be the spleen because the mineral required by that organ is copper.

However, on the other hand, the mineral that effects the stomach is sodium which would indicate high potassium would it not? WOW! So now I’ve got to switch gears here for a while and stop taking these Amino Acids, stop taking the potassium and load up on Calcium until I can get this right. Here’s another reason why my potassium could’ve been higher than I thought: Stressed adrenals.

I had my cold hands late in the afternoon followed by a wierd mild chest pinch. I always have my homeopathic magnesium with me at all times so I took one dose of that.

The chest pinch is definately something new as I had it under control so such a long time. I suppose it could be related to the potassium. I’ve been taking 99 mg three times a day since Sunday. (3 days) Could it be too much? I don’t think so because the daily dosage of potassium is 3500 milligrams. I’m barely talking 300 mg!!

Time to change up the vitamins a little. Today I’m going to add potassium. People with stressed adrenals are supposed to be low in potassium and it’s something I’ve added here and there but to change things up, I’ll add it again. I’ve also read about people with high sugar diets who can have low levels of potassium. It’s worth trying it again. I’m always thinking that I’m missing something obvious or overlooked something simple but until I get it, I will keep trying…

Also been doing a lot of reading about something called Glutathione and how a supplement called “NAC” can help.

Every morning for the longest time, whenever I woke up, I’d have tired, itchy eyes and usually it went away slowly throughout the morning. I always thought it was because I was tired and I was tired all the time. For the past two days since taking choline and inositol, my eyes feel like new in the mornings. It’s such a big obvious difference.

I don’t think it was riboflavin causing the dry itchy eyes of late that disappeared when I took B vitamins. Turns out that choline and inositol are included in my B complex supplement.

So now with the idea of a potassium deficiency, I grab three bananas on the way into work.

With this “new” heart symptom I recalled a past entry in my blog about a person with a similar problem with the calcium/magnesium ratios and I remember he mentioned something about potassium. The full entry was for August 10, 2007.

As I was struggling through this irregular heart rate problem, I found that two things often helped the situation: potassium and vitamin B-5. Potassium often helped and I think the reason for this is that potassium and magnesium are antagonistic minerals. Since I was essentially suffering from too much magnesium (or too little calcium), the potassium helped because it reduced the metabolic effect of the magnesium (or assisted the metabolism of calcium). I think this is important, particularly for persons with hypothyroidism, because they need a higher calcium to magnesium ratio. A potassium deficiency could prevent the cells from getting enough calcium which is an activator in the cellular response to thyroid hormone.

I also know that technically, my potassium should be low because of my long time stressed adrenals and the link with high copper. Interestingly, there is also a link with a potassium ratio and candida.

Effects Of Copper On Other Minerals

Copper, in excess, tends to lower manganese, zinc and potassium levels.

Correction of the sodium/potassium ratio is essential to eliminate yeast problems, because this is indicative of adrenal insufficiency, induced hyper-alkalinity, an impaired immune system, and deficient hydrochloric acid and bile acid secretion.

Excessive Intake of Sweets, Fruits and Fruit Juices

The majority of copper-toxic individuals have an insatiable craving for sweets, fruit, and fruit juices. Such cravings arise from the fact that copper-toxic individuals, in general, suffer from a severe potassium deficiency. Zinc, potassium and the adrenals…

ZINC RAISES POTASSIUM

Zinc helps lower the level of sodium and tends to raise the hair tissue level of potassium, especially in slow oxidizers. The reason for low hair potassium is underactive adrenal glands, and usually not a potassium deficiency. Potassium is found in many natural foods. Low aldosterone and other adrenal hormones, however, causes greater elimination of potassium in the urine.

When the hair potassium level is low, taking zinc is far more effective in helping to raise it than taking potassium. Potassium is a sympathetic or excitatory mineral which is not as helpful to restore the adrenal glands, providing one eats sufficient potassium, which most people do. Zinc is calming and has a more powerful effect in assisting the adrenals to rest and rebuild. This in turn raises the potassium level.

Very weird. When I first woke up this morning I could feel the vibration. But as I woke up it disappeared. I waited and changed positions a number of times but it didn’t come back.

Today I started off by adding kelp to my vitamins. Similar to yesterday, I took kelp first thing in the morning and then the rest just before lunch when my hands started getting cold.

I took one 250 mg of magnesium and that seemed to work until early afternoon and I got the cold hands again. With the idea of potassium floating around in my head, I decide to purchase two bananas just to see if it had any effect…and it did. I was fine for the rest of the day.

Around dinner time, I start to feel that very mild chest pain pressure that I used to feel when my magnesium was really low. This hasn’t happened in a very long time but it makes sense because I’m taking less magnesium lately. In fact, it hasn’t happened since I discovered the zinc deficiency.

This is the one weird symptom that scares me the most so I take 250 mg of magnesium and I add one 99 mg of potassium for good measure. If this was a sign of low magnesium and I’m sure that it was, could it be a low level of potassium?

Took another 99 mg of potassium before going to bed.

Here’s my latest thesis:

If low magnesium was causing the sodium to go high then the last time I tried to add potassium was before the magnesium loss was corrected. Therefore there would be no way that I could correct the potassium imbalance as long as the magnesium loss still existed.

Magnesium activates a key enzyme in cell membranes that controls the balance of sodium and potassium. This is absolutely essential to the electrical activity of nerve cells, as well as to the very existence of a cell. If it’s sodium-potassium ratio is too far out of balance, the cell would burst.

Oh boy….here we go again…
