I met with the Naturopath and review some of my successes from the amino acid test back in January. Told her about the successes with Rutin, Sam-e and Lipoic acid and what a difference it made. Then I explained about the new problem.

She starts the routine examination and she knows about my history with Mitral Valve Prolaspe and because this new pain is a chest pain not unlike the pain I’ve had in the past, she wants to check it. Good idea!

She does the standard stethoscope test and says she can’t hear it the abnormal rhythm associated with MVP. She asks me to crouch down and she wants to listen while I move to an upright position. She said it’s another way for listening for MVP. I’ve had so many different doctors listen to my heart but nobody’s done that before.

“Nope, I can’t hear it.”

A HUGE smile went across my face. That’s the first time a doctor has told me that I don’t have Mitral Valve Prolapse. I’ve seen so many different doctors in the past three years and of the ones who checked my heart, they heard something different. My magnesium must be in balance. The cardiologist told me it was a normal variant and it was nothing to worry about. He’s probably right but what they don’t tell you is that it can fixed and should be.

She checks a few more things and does a couple of muscle stretches and afterwards I take a deep breath and it doesn’t appear to bother me as much. Did the stretching work? I think it did. She suggests making an appointment with the chiropractor within the office. She introduces me to him and I book an appointment for Saturday.

I raced home from work today to get to the Naturopath on time. I’ve been wondering about these results for weeks now. I have my own theories on what my deficiencies are but I’ve wasted enough time and money guessing. I’m really hoping that I can sit down, read this report and get on with it.

She hands me the report and she reviews it page by page. The first page has the essential and non-essential amino acids and my level of each one. I have five amino acids on the low end of the scale: Methionine, Threonine, Aspartate, Asparagine and Glycine.

After the first page of amino acids, it groups them together to create different markers based on their role in the body.

Gastrointestinal Markers, Magnesium Dependant Markers, B6, B12 and Folate Dependant Markers, Detoxification Markers, Neurological Markers and Urea Cycle Metabolites.

After that, it has a page that provides a supplimentation schedule and another section called presumptive needs / implied conditions. The last three pages go into detail for each identified deficiency and explains the possible causes.

Very details and a little overwhelming. I’m a little disappointed that the Naturopath doesn’t offer anything more than just reading the report. I suppose it’s a no brainer to start supplementing the ones that I am low in but she doesn’t mention it. In a way I’m glad because I’d like to do some research on what all this means and review what I’ve already tried and come to my own conclusions. How do I know it’s accurate? I looks just like the hair analysis and that was a complete waste of time.

As we finish up the report, she mentions that my level of Phosphoethanolamine is lower than normal and suggests trying Lecithin. I’ve never come across it in my research although they consider it to be a nonessential amino acid. Here’s the summary from the report and I’m beginning to think this test is very accurate:

Phophoethanolamine, a nonessential phosphorous bearing amino acid, is low in this urine specimen. Phosphoethanolamine is derived from dietary sources and is also formed endogenously from serine via phosphorylation of ethanolamine. When ethanolamine is high or normal and phosphoethanolamine is low there is a presumptive need for magnesium (magnesium dependent kinase). Phosphoethanolamine is a precursor of phosphotidyl choline, choline and the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. If low phosphoethanolamine results in low acetylcholine, and there is insufficient choline from dietary lecithin, there may be depressed activity of the parasympathetic nervous system (eg. decreased peristalsis, ability to sweat), and poor memory and cognitive function. Low phosphoethanolamine is usually the result of magnesium deficiency or protein malnutrition.

Wow! That last line really hit a home run with me. I need to take all this information back to Dr. Google to see what I can find.

Follow up appointment with the Naturopath and she hands me the amino acid kit and explains the process. I’ve been playing around with these amino acids for a while now and it will be fantastic if I can get a simple report with the current levels within the body.

She does another physical examination and this time she says she is unable to hear the mitral valve prolapse. WHAT? Something I’ve had for almost twenty years, something every doctor mentions is now gone? Something a cardiologist said was a normal variation and that a lot of people have it…is gone.

I know why it is gone. Because it’s an indication of a low level of magnesium. Did taking magnesium help? Of course but it didn’t fix the problem. You need to look for the root cause because there are a number of different things that can cause magnesium loss. In my case, it was a low level of zinc. Once I made that discovery and fixed the zinc deficiency to bring the minerals back into balance, I was able to stop the magnesium loss.

Tomorrow I’ll get started with the amino acid test.

The Naturopath returns my email:
Sorry for the delayed response. We can go ahead and do the amino acid test. I have the kits at the clinic, so during your next visit, we can go through it and you can start it right after the visit. You should stop all supplements 48 hours prior to starting the test and eat what you normally eat (ie protein, etc).
 
There is just one concern – we have to freeze the sample for a minimum of 6 hours after collecting the urine for 24 hours before they come to pick it up. Could you put it in your freezer afterwards, and then I can arrange it to be picked up from the clinic.
Perfect! I’ll pick up the testing kit on my next appointment and get started! I book the next appointment for December 15th.

The Naturopath got back to me today:

I have attached 3 files for you to review about the amino acid testing. The 24-hour urine amino acid collection is more accurate and detects an earlier change than the plasma amino acid test.

Which type of analysis: urine or plasma?

The 24-hour urine amino acid analysis has the highest probability of detecting abnormalities if renal function is normal. The 24-hour test indicates what is high and low over the course of a day, reflects blood and tissue amino acid pools, and is not affected by circadian rhythm. Healthy kidneys efficiently conserve essential amino acids. Therefore, urine levels of amino acids decrease first and tend to give an earlier indication of inadequacy than do plasma levels.

A first morning void urine amino acid analysis, with results normalized per gram creatinine, provides an alternative when a complete 24-hour collection is not a viable option. The first morning void analysis is excellent for identification of marked abnormalities, particularly with respect to gastrointestinal health, inherited disorders in amino acid metabolism, and renal function, and can be used for protein challenge testing.

Plasma amino acid analysis measures what is being transported at the time of sampling. Abnormalities are deduced by comparison of measured levels with an established reference range. (The specimen should be collected after an overnight fast to reduce the influence of dietary protein). Plasma analysis is an excellent compromise if urine collection is difficult.

Looks like I’ll do the 24-hour urine test for the best results. If I am paying that much money, I want it to be as accurate as possible! The sample report looks interesting and contains NINE PAGES!!!

When do I start?!!! I’ve got to say it’s so much easier having a doctor I can have email correspondence with. I’ll send her an email to get the process started.

Off to the Naturopath with my notes in hand. I’m expecting a lot and hoping for a miracle but I’m doubtful at the same time. I just want to put an end to this once and for all.

I explained my main reason for the appointment and that my hunch is that my potassium has gone too high because of multiple doses of arginine. Then, we spend a long time reviewing the notes on an item by item basis. I give her a date and a comment description and she’ll ask the occasional question and take her own notes. Understandably, this took a bit of time and we went through everything. I ended the summary by indicating my interest in amino acids and the possibility of a deficiency test. I also told her about a book I was reading called “The Edge Effect” by Dr.  Eric Braverman. Such a brilliant book but sadly, she had never heard of it.

The second part of the appointment was a medical exam. She had me sit down on the examination chair and she did a number of standard things and was very, very professional and even did the Chinese pulse diagnosis! She was very thorough when listening to my heart. I was very interested to know if she could hear the mitral valve prolapse (Also called Right Branch Bundle Block.) She said she could hear it but it was very faint.

She would do some research regarding the treatment of high potassium levels and get me with a price for the amino acid test. I like her. She seems to listen and is okay following my direction. I’m very interested in the amino acid test, if it’s accurate.

Followed up with the naturopath. Usually I have my discoveries and detailed results of my experiments with me but not today. I’m expecting the test results from the hormonal test so I’ll let her take the lead. I’m sitting in the waiting area for about fifteen minutes before she comes out and calls my name. I was quite startled and she apologizes for scaring me.

She starts by asking about how I’ve been feeling since the last appointment on June 3rd. She wants to know about the high doses of niacin and if it’s had any effect. I’m really only interested in the test results and so with a lack of my usual enthusiasm, I explain my new theory about a B1 deficiency and how it’s critical for the creation of nerve sheaths. I show her Benfotamine and explain how it worked instantly. I continue and explain about Beriberi and how I’m still waiting for confirmation from a blood test taken two weeks ago. I mention the case study from Mount Sinai and explain about magnesium deficiencies and the connection to Mitral Valve Prolapse.

She doesn’t appear convinced and mentions that a magnesium deficiency would’ve shown up on the hair analysis. She pulls it out from my file and points to the bottom half and it shows that my magnesium level is normal. This is the same area that she told me to ignore the first time because it was considered too controversial for a reliable reading. I don’t mention anything and go along with it.

From a previous post:

“There has been no lab test that will give an accurate reading of the magnesium status in the tissues. Only one percent of magnesium of the body is distributed in the blood, making a simple sample of magnesium in the blood highly inaccurate. That’s why most doctors who rely on blood tests for magnesium and not magnesium deficiency signs and symptoms and realization that up to 80 percent of the population is deficient, will miss an important diagnosis.”

She also talks about the time I wasn’t feeling well after taking her suppliments and says it was due to the homopathic remedy she gave me and not the calcium/magnesium effect on an alkaline stomach. (Not a chance. She’s either not listening or doesn’t understand my problem.) I explain about how my nerves are shot and how I jumped out of my chair when she called my name. It’s not normal and the B vitamins are not working so it must be something else effecting the nerves and I really think it’s magnesium.

From the Hair Analysis, she talks about how I have high levels of Aluminum and Silver and asks me if I am still talking Zinc and Copper. I stopped taking those a while back when I quit taking the Calcium/Magnesium the first time and never started taking them again. She wants to take another hair analysis in a month’s time to see if there is any improvement. We start talking about the B vitamins again but I’m really starting to have my doubts. I think B1 was only part of the problem and not the root cause. She asks me about all of the vitamins I am taking and I’m only taking three extra. Lecithin, Omega Three and Silica. Again, she reviews the controversial part of the hair analysis and says my silica level was fine. She asks me if I’ve lost any weight and actually, I’ve gained weight but not on my waist so it appears that I’m building muscle but it sure doesn’t feel like it. She asks me if I exercise and of course I say no. Maybe if I felt better and stonger I would exercise.

Until recently, I’ve always used the second notch on my belt but lately, I’ve been using the third one. I bought a new pair of pants last week and normally I’m a 38 waist but I ended up buying the 36 because they were such a great fit. She takes my weight and I am 186 lbs. My ideal weight should be around 170 lbs.

She hands me the results from the hormone analysis. The report is quite technical and I don’t understand a lot of it but basically my hormones are normal. So much for hormone disruptors in plastic chemicals.

She wants me to monitor my head pinching and vibrations and follow up in three weeks. I purchase her B Complex vitamins from Thorne. I tell her that I’ve tried to replace it with her brand or and equivalent with the same dosage but I can’t find it anywhere. She says that Thorne is a very high end brand name that is only available to the medical community.

I’ve been monitoring my head pinching and vibrations for over a year and I’ve had enough. She doesn’t appear to be listening and apart from the mild improvment from her B vitamins, I’m not any closer to getter any better. In fact, I’ve had more success from my own research.

I have a list of weird neurological symptoms and she wants me to exercise. What a bunch or garbage and a complete waste of money. I’m not going back to the naturopath. A naturopath’s job is discover the root cause of symptoms and her theory is more exercise. I’m not paying a doctor to tell me to exercise when there are obvious signs of a bigger problem.

Now that I feel better using Benfotamine, I’ll prove it’s not the B vitamins anymore. There is something else happening here.

I’ve done quite a lot of research on the B vitamins lately and I don’t think the B complex vitamin that the naturopath gave me has the right dosage for me. For the past couple of weeks, I’ve had really itchy eyes and I’ve discovered it’s because of my high dosage of B2.

The optimum intake of supplemental vitamin B2 is not known. 20-25 mg of vitamin B2 is usually included in most good multivitamins and this is usually adequate for more people. Riboflavin is best taken with B group vitamins and vitamin C. If taking a B2 supplement make sure that the B6 amount is nearly the same.

Pyridoxine (B6) should be taken together with the entire B group vitamins, and in supplementation the quantity of B6 should be nearly the same as B2, as the B2 is needed to activate the Pyridoxine.

So I check the dosage of B2 in the  B complex vitamin and it contains 25 mg but I take it twice a day. The amount of B6 is 250 mg for a total of 500 mg per day.

After the lab, I decide that I’ll drop into the health food store and take a look. I’m going to create my own version of B complex as I don’t need too much B2 and I need the pure Niacin form of B3.

Here is the old dosage for taking 2 B complex pills from the Naturopath:

B1: 100 mg (Thiamine)
B2: 50 mg (Riboflavin)
B3: 160 mg (Niacinamide)
B5: 100 mg (Pantothenic Acid)
B6: 500 mg (Pyridoxine)
B7: 160 mcg (Biotin)
B9: 0.2 mg (Folic Acid)
B12: 100 mcg (Cobalamin)

While I am in the store checking out the vitamins, they sell a vitamin/mineral chart listing the benefits, diet recommendations, daily dosage, toxic dosage, and risk groups. It’s very clean and easy to understand. I’m looking at the hi-potency B complex and it actually not that high so with the chart, I’ll create my own. Yesterday was the first day I took the B1 vitamins (200 mg) and after reading that folic acid (B9) is required for B2 to work, I’ll make sure I have some of that. 0.2 mg doesn’t seem to be enough although the RDA is 400-mcg. Folic acid is also required for B12.

As I’m reading the chart, I come across serveral other vitamins that are good for the brain and nervous system. So I pick up Panothenic acid (B5) and Biotin (B7). I keep reading and I notice that Chromium, a mineral suppliment that the naturopath gave me on my first visit is recommended for the brain and nervous system and I still have some of that at home. It mentions that the upper daily limit for vitamin E is 1000 mg and it’s also good for brain and nerve function. I have been taking 400 mg every other day so maybe I’ll start taking that every day.

Zinc, another mineral suppliment that the naturopath recommended for reducing my high silver is listed as helpful for brain function. I get home and take all of the vitamins. I write the dosage on top with a marker.

This is my version of Hi-Potent B Complex:

B1: 300 mg (Thiamine)
B2: 30 mg (Riboflavin)
B3: 200 mg (Niacin)

My second appointment of the day was a follow up with my naturopath. I take in my research since my last visit and I have with me my EMF meter and my Miswaak. She pulls my file from her briefcase and mentions how she talks about my file in her current course.

She pulls out an article for me called “Oral Mines Uncovered” written by a homeopathic dentist Dr. Gary Fortinsky. In the article, she points out that exposure to mercury fillings can effect the nervous system. Interesting stuff but I had mine removed about ten years ago. I had them removed when I came across an article in the paper about a women who had experienced a variety of health issues and how she discovered that it was linked to her mercury fillings.

I start by showing her the meter and ask her if I can measure her laptop. She agrees and as I move closer, it raises the needle to the danger range. I offer it to her and she measures the power outlet beside her desk. It measures a low reading and I tell her to measure the power adapter attached to the cable. She does and it give a high reading. She seems really interested and wants to know where I bought it.

She asks about the stomach acid test and I told her I didn’t burp at all when I did the first test, and I did it again a few days later after taking niacin and it returned to normal. She makes a notation in her file. I tell her about the success with niacin and the B complex vitamins. She points out the high aluminum reading for my hair analysis and says I should be adding zinc to my daily vitamins. I ask her about the niacin dosage and if I can increase it. She looks it up in her medical book and gives the okay to increase it to 300 mg.

I review my notes and mention how my plantar fasciitis improved within days of taking niacin. She seemed surprised by this and I continue. I mention my allergies and how I came across a study that showed the effects of microwaving plastic and a possible link to Allergic Rhinitis. She tells me how the plastic can cause a hormone imbalance so I ask her if I can be tested. She provides the form and it will cost $240.00. Expensive but I’m going to do it. It’s a simple saliva test that has to be done within the first hour of waking up. The test is for the four main male hormones: Estradiol, Testosterone, DHEA and Cortisol.

Acupuncture appointment number nine. I tell her about the naturopath and the low dose of Niacin and she says to keep eating the foods with natural Niacin. I tell her that I’ve been eating turkey and tuna all week and she’s quite happy to hear that. She takes my blood pressure and it’s 127/95. It’s the lowest reading of the systolic pressure so far.

Today she works on my allergies and starts with the regular needles in my back and the cupping. In the middle of the cupping she comments on how the brusing is noticeably better.

I flip over and she starts on the stomach. I ask her to touch my feet and she notices they aren’t cold and clammy like they usually are. With all of these small successes, the Niacin is working wonders.

As I am leaving, she gives me another chinese herb called “Bimingan Wan” for my allergies.

Extensive testing looking for all kinds of disease and it appears to be a simple vitamin deficiency.

Followed up with the naturopath today and I presented my case with seventeen pages of research since my last visit on January 14th.  And I also have the new updated version of diet diary from last summer.

She listens carefully to all of my research and is very impressed at the amount of time spent on it. She occasionally takes a note as I review my history with her. I ask her what my triglycerides were on the blood test that was taken by my regular doctor back in June. The reading was above normal at 3.6. So even back then the flag was there if someone was looking for it. I do a quick google search and come across this statement:

Pharmacologic doses of niacin (1.5 to 6 grams/day in divided doses) typically reduce LDL cholesterol levels by 10 to 25 percent and triglyceride levels by 20 to 50 percent.

As I am reading I notice that my hands are really cold. Perfect lead in to my next discovery “Cold Hands” and I ask her to feel them and she notices the tips of my fingers are very cold.

We talk about the most common causes of indigestion and she says I can’t rule them all out as I thought I could. I tell her about the deficiency of hydrochloric acid and she asks me if the exessive amount of vitamin C had caused any diarrhea. Nope none at all.

Then I explain about the Niacin deficiency and how that can cause a lack of hydrochloric acid.

By the end she was impressed and I told her that I had already started taking a 50 mg low dose of Niacin a day since Monday. She wants me to take 100 mg of pure Niacin from a health food store and slowly increase it to 200 mg. She said not to worry about the flush sensation as it is a temporary side effect and that I should follow up with her in a couple of weeks. The stuff I bought from the drug store is actually Inositol Hexanicotinate an “equivalant” to Niacin.

Before I left, she told me about a simple test I could do to measure my acid level in the stomach:

First thing in the morning, before eating, mix 1/4 teaspoon of fresh baking soda into eight ounces of water and drink it. Time how long it takes you to belch. As the baking soda reacts with the stomach acid, carbon dioxide gas is formed and belched. It is normal to belch within two to three minutes. Not belching within five minutes is a crude indication of hypochlorhydria – insufficient stomach acid.

Great! I’ll try that tomorrow morning.

After the first few days of the vitamin diet I have the weird mild pinch in my chest again so I stop taking the B6 complex and the pain goes away.

By the end of the first week I am feeling worse. Nothing specific just an overall feeling of being ill. Why do I have a sick feeling from taking vitamins? I decide to stop taking the vitamins and minerals all together.

My father in law is seventy years old this year and he was recently diagnosed with Celiac which means a gluten-free diet. Maybe that’s what I have? I try to avoid wheat and gluten foods for one week and again, the symptoms are no different.

I give up. Every doctor I’ve seen doesn’t seem to think there is anything wrong with me and the Naturopath is sympathetic but can’t seem to find the root cause of my symptoms. I understand it can be a long process to do the testing but it’s coming up to a year and I’m really fed up with not making any progress.

Acidophilus and Vitamin C are the only two things that work but no one seems to know why. I decide to keep doing the things that make me feel well, and stop doing google research. I’ve spent a lot of time researching my symptoms and I keep finding bits here and bits there that have turned up false leads but there is nothing that I’ve come across that seem to put every symptom together.

Back to the Naturopath. Followed up for the results of the Hair Analysis Test and told her about my new discoveries and about the Colonoscopy. She said the fact that the Colonoscopy was clean meant that I was lucky enough to catch the problem early so that there was no damage.

The Hair Analysis report is divided into two sections and she said to ignore the second half because it was considered too controversial for a reliable reading. We talked about the first part of the Hair Analysis and two things stood out. My aluminum and silver levels were both above normal. She said Aluminum was fairly common as it can be found in deodorants. The high level of silver was unusual.

She recommended I try a vitamin diet to get the levels back to normal.

Today is my follow up appointment with the naturopath. Yesterday was my last dose of the ultra flora pills. I didn’t think it was making a difference so I won’t bother getting a second batch. Besides, it’s forty dollars a bottle!

In the waiting area I grab a book from the shelf called “Natural Cures They Don’t Want You To Know About” by Kevin Trudeau. I remember my wife telling me about one of his infomercials and we had a brief discussion about it a while back. So I start reading the first chapter and was blown away with what I read. The naturopath then calls me into her office and I put the book down.

My basal temperature readings for the past week are as follows:

Tuesday- 36.37

Wednesday- 36.02

Thursday- 36.15

Friday- 36.25

Saturday- 35.95

I compare them to the last set of readings and they are not much different. I still have the cold body temperature. Interesting but what does it mean?

We talk about the effects of the Candida diet. No real improvement and still vibrating. I also mention about the mild chest pain when I took the B complex vitamins and she said there should be no side effects so I mention sympathy pregnancy. She tells me of a hormone test and shows me a chart of symptoms for each of the three hormones they test for. Estrogen, Andogen and Cortisol.

The Cortisol Deficiency symptoms are interesting. From the ten listed, I appear to have five (*) of them and possibly seven.

Cortisol (Adrenal Function) – Check List For Men

  4. Chemical sensitivity
  5. Stress?

Could the stress be the internal vibrations? The doctor said in my first appointment that internal vibrations are usually caused by stress.

The test is expensive so I tell her I’ll think about it. We are only two months away now and why spend the money if I don’t need to. I’ve waited this long so what’s a little bit longer? She recommended another test that would be a lot cheaper. A Hair Analysis Test.

Drug and chemical residues, toxins, heavy metals, and radiation present in the body embed in hair fiber protein as it grows. Hair has the advantage of long-term memory. It’s a permanent record, like tree rings. A three-inch strand of human hair will give a six-month history of what’s going on in the body since head hair grows at a rate of about a half an inch a month.

Clinical research indicates that hair levels of specific elements, particularly toxic elements, correlate with pathological disorders. For such elements, the levels in the hair provide a superior indication of body stores opposed to blood or urine specimens. Follow up with my doctor and the ultrasound results are in!

He comes into the room with the report and tells me there was no sign of any tapeworm. He goes on to list everything that was checked. The kidneys, liver, pancreas, stomach, and the gallbladder. The end result? Everything was normal. I felt really stupid leading him down this wrong path of tapeworms and for this appointment, I could tell he was maybe a little annoyed with me. He now had the attitude “I’m the doctor and YOU are the patient”

Somewhat humbled, I handed him a list of my new symptoms. The heart palpitations, the pinching in my head, the twiching followed by a flush, the chest pain, the stiff neck pain. He agrees that something is wrong but he doesn’t feel he can do anything more without seeing a specialist.

At this point, I didn’t mention about the naturopath as I didn’t think he would like the fact that I’ve asked for a second opinion. I had the basal temperature readings with me and I was going to mention the thyroid again but because he wasn’t interested in my recent symptoms, I kept it to myself and I didn’t mention the candida diet either.

Maybe I’m going mental. We are now six months along in the pregnancy and maybe it’s just sympathy after all. Nothing is showing up in these test results. I follow up again with the naturopath next week so let’s see what she says.

I’m really starting to think that there is nothing wrong. The Candida diet isn’t showing the significant results I was hoping for and I am still taking the ultra flora. Still not sure if it’s having any effect. I haven’t had the bloated feeling in a while but as I’ve said before, it’s so inconsistant I can’t say for certain if it’s making a difference. I’m starting to get real tired of eating pears all of the time. It is still working for the vibrations but I’m just sick of eating them.

When I follow up with the naturopath, I’ll mention sympathy pregnancy.

Went to the naturopath for my follow up appointment. I gave her my basal temperature readings for the past six days:

Monday – 36.05

Tuesday- 36.12

Wednesday- 36.01

Thursday- 35.98

Friday- 35.75

Saturday- 36.04

With the target range being 36.5 to 36.7, I am well under the normal reading so does this indicate thyroid? The doctor said my thyroid was fine.

She asked if the ultra flora was making a difference and it’s really hard to say because the bloating is so inconsistent. I think it’s too early to tell. She then pulled out the results from the urine test. (I’ve already had two of these that showed normal so let’s see if she finds anything different.)

She said it showed a high level of free radicals and told me about how it can effect the body. On a scale of zero to three, three being the highest, I scored four. She also pointed out that my adrenals were stressed. Adrenals? Never heard of them… On a scale of 17 to 25 as the normal range, I scored 29. My malabsorption was high as well scoring a 3-4 in the moderate/severe range but everything else looked okay.

Free radicals and stressed adrenals. We talked more about the types of foods I eat and she suggested I try a yeast free Candida diet for three weeks and see if there is any improvement.

Candida is believed to contribute to many troubling and vague health problems including:

Chronic vaginal yeast infections, with classic symptoms of itchiness, burning, and abnormal discharge, Digestive symptoms, such as irritable bowel syndrome, gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, or heartburn, Respiratory allergies, such as sneezing, congestion and/or wheezing, Food allergies, Chronic fatigue, Nervous system symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, irritability, poor memory and/or poor concentration, Menstrual irregularities, such as severe premenstrual tension and/or irregular menstruation and Skin rashes

That’s a lot of symptoms! It included digestive and nervous system symptoms so I was willing to give it a try. Why didn’t any other doctor mention this?

She gave me an outline of the diet and listed the different types of food that is allowed and not allowed. After reading the list, I knew it was going to be an uphill battle.

Candida Diet: Foods to Consume

These include: onions and garlic, fresh vegetables (eg. cabbage, broccoli, turnips, brussel sprouts, kohlrabi), rice cakes, oat cakes, corn tortillas, tacos, Ryvita (sesame/original), soy milks, butter, cottage cheese and yogurt, freshly cracked nuts, seeds, water, fruit and herb teas, cold pressed oils, brown rice and brown flours, oats (eg. porridge), meats (chicken, lamb or veal), fresh fish (esp. oily fish), shellfish, eggs, lentils, peas and beans. Choose organic varieties where possible.

Candida Diet: Foods to Eliminate

1. All Types of Sugar
Brown, white, syrup, molasses, turbinado, demerrara, honey, corn syrup, maple syrup, maple sugar, date sugar, amisake, rice syrup, sorghum. This includes “hidden sugars” such as: sucrose, dextrose, maltose, lactose, glycogen, glucose, mannitol, sorbitol, galactose, monosaccharides, polysaccharides. Fruit sugars (fructose) also feed Candida, so avoid all frozen, canned, and dried fruit, and fruit juices. Alcoholic drinks like wine, beer, cider, whiskey, brandy, gin, scotch, any fermented liquor, vodka, rum, and all liqueurs.

2. All Yeast-Containing Foods
Baker’s yeast, Brewer’s yeast, Engevita, Torula, bakery products raised with yeast like breads, rolls, crackers, bagels, pastries, muffins, ready to eat cereals (excepting Shredded Wheat and Kashi), white flour or white flour foods like cakes, cookies, pasta. Vinegar is made using yeast culture. Vinegar-containing foods include: pickles, pickled foods, relishes, mayonnaise, salad dressing, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, mustard, horseradish, chili sauce, to name but a few.

She wanted me to go on the diet for three weeks and take my basal temperature reading again the week before my next appointment. She gave a supplement called B6 Complex and I was to take it twice a day.

The one thing I’ve learned today? Sugar and wheat are in EVERYTHING!!!

As I walk into the office of the Naturopath, she starts telling me about how doctors are seeing more younger patients with problems and diseases that are normally associated with adults. One of her patients is a seven year old with gallstones.

So we get started and I tell her my main symptom is the internal vibrations. Over the next ninety minutes she goes through a long series of questions and it’s almost like a job interview. I’m impressed. We review my complete medical history and talk about my appendicitis as a child and more recently, mitral valve prolapse. We discuss my current issues and I mention the tapeworms, suspected thyroid, sympathy pregnancy and stress.

She’s interested in the thyroid opinion and tells me about a simple way to check. Every morning before I get out of bed, she wants me to record my basal temperature reading with the target range being 97.8 to 98.2.

We talk about everything including my sinusitis that I’ve had since 1991 and I explain my timeline of symptoms and review my diet diary report. Only two things effect my allergies: Cigarette smoke and carbonated drinks. I’ve always mentioned these two things to every doctor and no-one can ever understand why these have an effect on my allergies.

As she reviews the diet diary she circles certain foods.

“Pizza, Philly Steak Sub, Tuna Sandwich, Chicken Pot Pie, Bagel, Cheeseburger, Chicken Sandwich, Chicken Noodle Soup, Egg Salad Sandwich, Steak Sandwich, Veggie Burger, Chocolate Croissant, Grilled Veggie Sandwich, Turkey Sandwich”

Almost one item for every day of the diary. She talks about how every item she circled contains wheat and mentions how she sees a lot of people with gastrointesinal symptoms that turns out to be wheat intolerance.

She told me to reduce my wheat intake and drink more water.

She also did a physical exam checking my abdominal area and everything appeared normal. She then did a blood type test and I am blood type A. She also did a blood sugar blood test and it was in the high end of normal. I think it was around 5.9?

She asked if I was a big meat eater and of course I was. She told me that blood type A people are usually vegetarians and should be eating 30 percent meat in their diet. Type O people were the big meat eaters. Well as it turns out, my mother is type A and a vegetarian and my father is type O. He’s a huge meat eater so all of this was starting to make sense.

After the appointment, I was very happy with the new knowledge and she gave me two tablets of Calc Carb and told me to take Ultra flora suppliment twice a day and gave me some digestive enzymes. She recommened taking something called Chromium.

She also requested a urine sample for analysis. She wants me to follow up in a week for the test results and to see how things are progressing.

I call a number of Naturopaths in the area and I get mostly answering machines. I finally get a hold of a live person and I ask for the soonest appointment. Her weekends were booked until late August but she did have an opening this Friday morning. I’d have to take the day off work but it will be worth it.

She wants me to download a diet diary form from her website. I tell her I already have a database and was tracking my food intake and symptoms. The following is posted on her web site:

WOW! I’m impressed. 1 ½ hours on my first visit. She’ll need it with the story I have.

Day Three: Today is the end of my three day pineapple diet and I feel great. I had a veggie burger for dinner so what made me feel better? The pineapple diet or the veggie burger?

So after two months I’m still vibrating and my doctor is no closer to solving the puzzle. So far I’ve discovered that pears and pineapples make me feel good so maybe it’s time to visit a Naturopath. I check my work coverage and they will pay eighty percent.

It’s not thyroid, it’s not a tapeworm. Could it be sympathy pregnancy?

Who knows…??? Back to Google. I spend most of the evening looking for something else to match my symptoms. I come across a web site that explains the importance of maintaining the balance of your PH level in your body. The body is normally alkaline and a poor diet can change the PH level to acidic making you prone to illness and disease. I find another web site that list the different types of foods that can have an effect on your PH level. On the list for Alkaline foods is Pineapple and Pears. WOW! The two things that make me feel better. I wonder if I can get a PH home testing kit to find out if my body is acidic.

I’m back in Shoppers Drug Mart and I spend a long time in each isle looking for a PH tester and I can’t find anything. I go to the back and ask the Pharmacist if they have a home testing Blood PH kit. She says they don’t carry them. Weird…if the PH balance of the body is so important, why don’t they sell it?

Around this time my wife and I are starting to buy things for the baby and for a while now I’ve noticed that I feel sick everytime we go into the Toys R Us store on Thickson Road. I didn’t think much of it before now but it seems to happen everytime we are in the store.

Sounds like sympathy pregnancy…
