I met with the Naturopath and review some of my successes from the amino acid test back in January. Told her about the successes with Rutin, Sam-e and Lipoic acid and what a difference it made. Then I explained about the new problem.

She starts the routine examination and she knows about my history with Mitral Valve Prolaspe and because this new pain is a chest pain not unlike the pain I’ve had in the past, she wants to check it. Good idea!

She does the standard stethoscope test and says she can’t hear it the abnormal rhythm associated with MVP. She asks me to crouch down and she wants to listen while I move to an upright position. She said it’s another way for listening for MVP. I’ve had so many different doctors listen to my heart but nobody’s done that before.

“Nope, I can’t hear it.”

A HUGE smile went across my face. That’s the first time a doctor has told me that I don’t have Mitral Valve Prolapse. I’ve seen so many different doctors in the past three years and of the ones who checked my heart, they heard something different. My magnesium must be in balance. The cardiologist told me it was a normal variant and it was nothing to worry about. He’s probably right but what they don’t tell you is that it can fixed and should be.

She checks a few more things and does a couple of muscle stretches and afterwards I take a deep breath and it doesn’t appear to bother me as much. Did the stretching work? I think it did. She suggests making an appointment with the chiropractor within the office. She introduces me to him and I book an appointment for Saturday.

Back in February I ordered a bunch of amino acids from a health food company in the states because I wasn’t able to find them anywhere here in Canada. I tried them here and there in different doses without the any real results. I thought there would be a noticable difference because I had followed the results of the amino acid test. When I didn’t get the results I was looking for, it was off in another direction and I tried something else.

Today I decided to try them again. There are a number of other amino acids that depend on aspartic acid so it seemed like a logical place to start and interestingly, the amino acid test indicated that I had low levels of five of the six. I always feel like a detective when I find stuff like this. Find the needle in a hay stack that leads to the breakthough…I can only hope!

Aspartic acid plays an important role in the citric acid cycle, or Krebs cycle, during which other amino acids and biochemicals, such as asparagine, arginine, lysine, methionine, threonine, isoleucine, and several nucleotides are synthesized.

Low aspartic acid can also be associated with low calcium and magnesium levels.

Vitamins are an essential part of human body. The vitamin helps in improving digestion and therefore, increases the body’s ability to tolerate low glucose levels. They also know as Anti-Stress vitamins because of their good effects on the brain and nervous system. The B-complex vitamins are a group of eight vitamins, which include Thiamine (B1), Riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), Pyridoxina (B6), Folic Acid (B9), Cyanocobalmin (B12), Pantothenic acid and bioten. A particular potential benefit of vitamin B supplements for diabetics is mainly its ability to lower blood levels of homocysteine (a suphur-containing amino acid). Hence, the vitamins B are also essential for breakdown of carbohydrates into glucose, which provides energy for the body. It also helps in breakdown of fats and proteins, which helps in normal functioning of the nervous system.

Vitamin B-6 is helpful in the women reporting with gestational diabetes and for protection against metabolic imbalances associated with the use of some oral contraceptive. Vitamin B6 is also useful in the management of carpal tunnel syndrome. It help in reducing homocysteine. It maintains fluid balance and is essential for cellular energy production. It is somewhat beneficial to prevent skin eruptions also. Therefore, the amaging family of vitamin B is very helpful. Vitamin B6 levels are even lower in people with diabetes who have nerve damage i.e. neuropathy. So, the administration of bath Vitamin B1 (25 mg per day) and vitamin B6 (50 mg per day) shows significant improvement of symptoms of diabetic neuropathy after four weeks, because Vitamin B1 is also found to be low in people with type 1 diabetes.

Biotin (The Vitamin B) is needed to process of glucose. Patient with Type-1 of diabetes showed fasting glucose level dropped by 50% on administration of 16 mg of biotin per day for one week. Biotin may also reduce pain from diabetic nerve damage.

Vitamin C: Diabetic people also have low vitamin C levels. Vitamin C may reduce glycosylation. Vitamin C also lowers sorbital in people with diabetes. Sorbital is a sugar that can accumulate and damage the nerves eyes and kidney of people with diabetes. Vitamin C may improve glucose tolerance in patients with Type-2 diabetes. Vitamin C significantly reduces urinary protein loss in people with diabetes. Diabetic people should have 1-3 grams per day of vitamin C.

Vitamin B-12: Vitamin B-12 is needed for normal functioning of nerve cells. Vitamin B12 taken orally, intravenously or by injection reduces the nerve damage caused by diabetes in most of the people. The intake of large amounts of niacin (a form of the vitamin B 3), such as 2-3 grams per day, may impair glucose tolerance and shall be used by diabetic people only under doctor’s advice.

Vitamin D: It is needed to maintain adequate blood levels of insulin. Vitamin D receptors have been found in the pancreas where insulin is produced hence the supplements of vitamin D, increases insulin level in people suffering form diabetes. But it should be given in accurate dose as high dose of vitamin D can be toxic.

Vitamin E: Vitamin E prevents the destructive vascular damage that may occur in diabetes. Vitamin E supplements prevents the arterial degeneration in patients suffering from diabetes. Vitamin E decreases the requirement of insulin by diabetic people. Vitamin E is available naturally in whole grain products, wheat products, fruits, green leafy vegetables milk, whole raw or sprouted seeds.

Weird feeling on the way into work and once again it was fixed by taking calcium/magnesium. Is my potassium still too high??? I wonder if calcium actually lowers the potassium or just prevents it from going higher?

In addition to medical situations that can lead to hyperkalemia, cellular potassium covers aspects of bladder functions, as well as right-sided ovarian and testicular properties. Cellular zinc covers aspects of prostate / uterine functions, and left-sided ovarian and testicular properties. Elevated potassium is invariably found with acute or chronic Cystitis (bladder infections) or right-sided Ovarian cysts (but not dermoid or chocolate cysts), whereby right-sided ovarian and/or testicular Cancer will always result in excessively high potassium levels, which can also serve as a high risk indicator to be suggestive of a pelvic scan.

Interesting how high potassium levels are linked to testicular cancer. Interesting because Lance Armstrong was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Someone who would lose quite a bit of sodium from sweating all the time.

Lance Armstrong won a world title in bicycle racing before his first full season as a professional. At 25, he won the World Championships, the Tour Du Pont and multiple Tour de France.

Then he found out in 1996 he had testicular cancer. His cancer then spread throughout his stomach, lungs and brain. If cancer is testicular cancer is discovered early, a man is usually given a 70% chance of survival. Because, Armstrong says he ignored warning signals, his chances of survival dropped as low as 40%.

Armstrong said in an interview in the Testicular Cancer Resource Center, he remembered thinking, “Oh my God, I’m going to die!”

“It just got so painful, I couldn’t sit on my bike anymore,” Armstrong remembered in the interview. He even coughed up blood once. “I thought if I coughed up a little blood, and if I don’t do it tommorrow, then it must not be so bad.” Armstrong didn’t give up and this year he won the Tour de France race for the second year in a row–the major race in the world for bicyclists. The race lasts 2,274 miles over , 23 day test of stamina and courage.

Armstrong got to that point by not giving up. He said he declared himself a cancer survivor, not a cancer victim. He had chemotherapy and surgury. He had a physical treatment program , a competitive spirit and a support system. He was declared cancer free.

“In 1996, two months before I was diagnosed, the illness was raging,” Armstrong said in an interview with Associated Press. He says thirty years ago, 95 percent of those who had testicular cancer died, but today 95 percent survive. “In 2000, I’m not much of a miracle,” he explained “Thirty years ago, yes it would have been a miracle.”

Armstrong also wants to help others. In 1996, he founded the Lance Armstrong Foundation. The organization provides grants and partnerships to institutions and organizations to help fight cancer. It also is active in public education about the disease.

In 1995 he established the Lance Armstrong Junior Series to promote the sport among youth. Armstrong may be a good model to young people, both for his accomplishments as an athlete and his successful fight against cancer.

Started the day with a magnesium, lunch switched to calcium/magnesium, another calcium/magnesium before leaving and another calcium/magnesium at dinner. Felt so much better than yesterday. I think my problem is still potassium and yesterday I was fighting it with magnesium which doesn’t have the same relationship as calcium does. Added Chromium after reading that it can lower potassium. I skipped the lecithin today and my cold hands weren’t as bad.

I think I’ll stick to the mineral balancing instead of the herbs…

Tightness in my chest again today after lunch disappeared with magnesium and not calcium. Fighting with cold hands all day which is weird because I’m still talking the lecithin. Weird.

I’m now beginning to think that the recent issues have been caused by magnesium loss because of the licorice root getting rid of the potassium. Ended up taking 1000 mg of magnesium today which is way more than I’ve taken in a long, long time.

Something is not right. I took calcium/magnesium along with licorice along with some extra magnesium before I left for work and I have that little chest pinch again. So is the potassium too high or not? Maybe it’s possible that I’m losing magnesium along with the loss of potassium??? I’m not really sure…

I raced home from work today to get to the Naturopath on time. I’ve been wondering about these results for weeks now. I have my own theories on what my deficiencies are but I’ve wasted enough time and money guessing. I’m really hoping that I can sit down, read this report and get on with it.

She hands me the report and she reviews it page by page. The first page has the essential and non-essential amino acids and my level of each one. I have five amino acids on the low end of the scale: Methionine, Threonine, Aspartate, Asparagine and Glycine.

After the first page of amino acids, it groups them together to create different markers based on their role in the body.

Gastrointestinal Markers, Magnesium Dependant Markers, B6, B12 and Folate Dependant Markers, Detoxification Markers, Neurological Markers and Urea Cycle Metabolites.

After that, it has a page that provides a supplimentation schedule and another section called presumptive needs / implied conditions. The last three pages go into detail for each identified deficiency and explains the possible causes.

Very details and a little overwhelming. I’m a little disappointed that the Naturopath doesn’t offer anything more than just reading the report. I suppose it’s a no brainer to start supplementing the ones that I am low in but she doesn’t mention it. In a way I’m glad because I’d like to do some research on what all this means and review what I’ve already tried and come to my own conclusions. How do I know it’s accurate? I looks just like the hair analysis and that was a complete waste of time.

As we finish up the report, she mentions that my level of Phosphoethanolamine is lower than normal and suggests trying Lecithin. I’ve never come across it in my research although they consider it to be a nonessential amino acid. Here’s the summary from the report and I’m beginning to think this test is very accurate:

Phophoethanolamine, a nonessential phosphorous bearing amino acid, is low in this urine specimen. Phosphoethanolamine is derived from dietary sources and is also formed endogenously from serine via phosphorylation of ethanolamine. When ethanolamine is high or normal and phosphoethanolamine is low there is a presumptive need for magnesium (magnesium dependent kinase). Phosphoethanolamine is a precursor of phosphotidyl choline, choline and the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. If low phosphoethanolamine results in low acetylcholine, and there is insufficient choline from dietary lecithin, there may be depressed activity of the parasympathetic nervous system (eg. decreased peristalsis, ability to sweat), and poor memory and cognitive function. Low phosphoethanolamine is usually the result of magnesium deficiency or protein malnutrition.

Wow! That last line really hit a home run with me. I need to take all this information back to Dr. Google to see what I can find.

I received a follow up from the job interview last week and they would like a second interview. I was even more confident this time and was very careful to follow the same routine as last time. Vitamin C and acidophilus in the morning, calcium/magnesium around lunch and homeopathic tablets in the pockets during the interview.

halloween2007

Having a job interview on Halloween day made me wonder if the interviewer would be in a costume. My daughter had decided that all three of us were going to dress up as the Wizard of Oz and I ended up as Dorothy. But not for the interview…

I wanted to to absolute certain that I would have no problems so I didn’t want to mess around with anything except what I know works. I took vitamin C and acidophilus in the morning and a calcium/magnesium around lunch time. I had decided to take four tablets of homeopathic magnesium and four tables of homeopathic calcium in my pockets in case I ran into any trouble. I was confident during the interview and in my abilities so I think that helped me get through it without any issues.

With the interview finished, I drove home to throw on dress, give out some candy and relax.

Yesterday I reduced my potassium to half a capsule (49.5 mg) and I’ll so the same thing today.

On my way into work I was sitting on the train and I had the chest pain again so I took the homeopathic magnesium and it had no effect. Luckily in my little vitamin pack I carry around I have my other magnesium (250 mg) and again it had no effect. Now I’m starting to get a little worried, if magnesium doesn’t help what will?

I looked through my vitamin pack again and I have a Calcium/Magnesium with me and I’m not really comfortable that the problem is over so I take one of those too. I managed to make it to work without any more problem so why did the calcium have an effect when the magnesium did not? It doesn’t make any sense. I unlock my computer and start quickly googling away…

Within minutes I find exactly what I am looking for. Hyperkalemia….and one of the listed causes is high dosages of Arginine and one of the listed treatments? Calcium.

Calcium

Calcium is one of the first treatment options for a high potassium level. If you are suffering from irregular heart beats, the doctor will give you intravenous calcium to help protect your heart and muscles. Calcium will only be effective for an hour, so other treatments will begin immediately.

And something else I found:

Arginine and lysine amino acids enter the muscle cell in exchange for potassium, thereby leading to an increase in extracellular potassium.

Potassium & Arginine side effects and warnings

Arginine has been well tolerated by most people in studies lasting for up to six months, although there is a possibility of serious side effects in some people. Stomach discomfort, including nausea, stomach cramps, or an increased number of stools, may occur. People with asthma may experience a worsening of symptoms, which may be related to allergy, if arginine is inhaled.

Other potential side effects include low blood pressure and changes in numerous chemicals and electrolytes in the blood.

Examples include high potassium, high chloride, low sodium, low phosphate, high blood urea nitrogen, and high creatinine levels.

People with liver or kidney diseases may be especially sensitive to these complications and should avoid using arginine except under medical supervision. After injections of arginine, low back pain, flushing, headache, numbness, restless legs, venous irritation, and death of surrounding tissues have been reported.

And other thing that is starting to make sense… A while ago I was researching the cracks on my tongue and it was either the spleen or the stomach as they are both in the same area. (Entry for September 18, 2007) I figured it to be the spleen because the mineral required by that organ is copper.

However, on the other hand, the mineral that effects the stomach is sodium which would indicate high potassium would it not? WOW! So now I’ve got to switch gears here for a while and stop taking these Amino Acids, stop taking the potassium and load up on Calcium until I can get this right. Here’s another reason why my potassium could’ve been higher than I thought: Stressed adrenals.

When the adrenals become fatigued and unable to release adequate amounts of aldosterone or cortisol, potassium levels rise, sodium and blood sugar levels fall, body fluid volume decreases and hypotension and dehydration can result.

This is very serious stuff. So maybe my potassium level wasn’t low afterall…

One full day taking Glycine and once again, I can feel a slight difference with the candida. I’m starting slow by taking one teaspoon in the morning and again at night. I can feel the benefits from it but it also gives me a weird feeling whenever I take it. Almost like it has an effect on my magnesium. So I’ve been adding one or two 250 mg of magnesium during the day. Not sure why it has the effect or maybe it’s because my copper is still low enough to effect the magnesium.

I guess I really need to focus on taking the 3 mg of copper a day along with some higher dosages of magnesium and build those up for a while…

Today I decided to join a ball hockey game with some guys at work. I feel better but I’m still not perfect or as good as I should be. Maybe some exercise would do some good. I’m still a little paranoid about the stress of playing hockey so I took one magnesium just before the game and homeopathic magnesium during the game.

Two hours later I was absolutely exhausted but I felt pretty good having not done anything thing like that in at least seven years. Maybe longer…

Today was different. I got my cold hands during the morning commute into work so I had 1.5 mg of copper and it went away.

During the morning the cold hands returned again and I took another 1.5 mg of copper but this time it didn’t work. All day I struggled with the cold hands and I wasn’t really sure of the cause. By the end of the afternoon, my candida was really bad so this weekend I’ve decided not to get any fruit to see if I can get better by avoiding the fruit sugar.

I’ve started taking a higher dosage of niacin. 1000 mg of niacinamide and 200-300 mg of niacin along with calcium/magnesium.

I had an early meeting downtown today and we needed to set the alarm for 5:00 AM. Now I’ve never been a morning person and I was slightly worried that I wouldn’t get up in time even with the early alarm.

How did it go? The alarm goes and the first thing I notice is no vibration. 5:15 AM and I’m up getting started and we get out of the house on time to make my early train. Despite getting up at that ungodly hour, my eyes were not itchy and watery like they usually are in the morning and today it was extra early so I think that was a really good test.

Now, if I can just raise my magnesium level…

Woke up with the vibration…

This morning it’s back to work so I added some extra magnesium just in case. I sat down at my desk and started my daily routine and it hit me like a tonne of bricks. The magnesium loss must be because my copper is low. This is fantastic!!!!

I actually have some homeopathic copper on me so I take that with 1 magnesium and I could feel the difference. I should’ve known it because of the candida supplements were working, the minerals were balanced afterall. It makes sense because I’m been taking a high dosage of zinc everyday since the beginning of February. Hard to believe but it’s been over six months of treatment so maybe I did go too far? I had no real sign that the zinc had been corrected.

Starting tomorrow, I’ll take the candida supplements along with my multivitamin and a calcium/magnesium.

This is great news! Magnesium is my friend again.

I took my regular vitamins in the morning and about two hours later, I felt so sick. It felt like my stomach was upset from too much zinc. I’ve taken a high dosage of zinc on an empty stomach in the past so I know exactly what it feels like.

I had to lie down for about an hour and it passed. I decided to skip the rest of the vitamins for the rest of the day but I’m sure the cause was the zinc.

Just before going to bed, I start getting that “feeling” in my chest again. It’s only a mild feeling but I’ve had it so many times before. I take 1 250 mg of magnesium and I feel a lot better. So what the heck is causing this extra magnesium loss? At least this time I know what the symptoms are and I have the best form of magnesium along with the homeopathic form.

Yesterday was another great day and I can really feel a difference with these new vitamins. Especially with my eyes so I think it’s the inositol that is responsible for that.

Inositol plays an important part in the health of cell membranes especially the specialized cells in the brain, bone marrow, eyes and intestines.

No vibration and no cold hands during the day either… so I think that’s the choline working.

Choline assists in controlling your weight as well as cholesterol levels, keeping cell membranes healthy and in preventing gallstones. It is also most useful in the maintenance of the nervous system, assisting memory and learning, and may help to fight infections, including hepatitis and AIDS.

Because the candida supplements are working this time round my assumption is that the minerals that I’ve been fighting with for the past months are now getting somewhat balanced.

For breakfast I had Raisin Bran, tuna sandwich for lunch, one apple and two pears for snacks. The success against the candida and the recent improvements, I’m started to feel like I’m really making some progress.

I meet by wife at her parents house and we pick up my daughter and head home. The same routine it’s been for almost a year now. We get home around 7:00 PM and as I enter the house I feel a weird pain in my upper left chest. It’s a pain I’ve had before but not since I discovered magnesium. I was panicked because I’ve been doing so well lately. I don’t go anywhere without my homeopathic magnesium so luckily I took some right away. And because I was home, I could take one 250 mg of magnesium. The pain disappeared and I was somewhat confused as to what had happened. I sat down for a bit and had a glass of water.

When I was settled, I wanted to check my iris in the mirror to see if I could see anything in the area of the heart and it looked normal. Checking my iris in the mirror is actually something I do now almost on a weekly basis. I bought a little flashlight and carry it around with me.

So why the chest pain? I’m not really sure…
