For the past several weeks I’ve had a couple of different things happening and I’m not really sure of the cause. I’ve felt a subtle numbness in the tips of my fingers that seems to come and go. I’ve also had itchy watery eyes and I can’t seem to put my finger on it either. One day I’ll try chromium and then another day I’ll try calcium. They both seem to help stop my watering eyes and I’ve even noticed that eating fruits like apples, pears and bananas will improve my eyes on days that I don’t take any supplements. Weird…

The only thing I have in the back of my mind is diabetes or high/low blood sugar but I’ll need more research before I go running after that. Here’s what I found:

Calcium, vitamin D may lower diabetes risk

High intake of calcium and vitamin D, particularly from supplements, may lower the risk of diabetes by 33 per cent, say American scientists, as a leading European clinician reports that over a billion people are vitamin D deficient.

A growing body of epidemiological, animal and clinical studies has linked insufficient levels of vitamin D and calcium to a broad range of health problems such as osteoporosis, cancer and autoimmune diseases.

Vitamin D is found in low concentrations in some food, and most vitamin D is manufactured in the skin on exposure to sunlight. Recent studies have shown that sunshine levels in some northern countries are so weak during the winter months that the body makes no vitamin D at all.

Indeed, at the European Congress of Endocrinology in Glasgow yesterday, Professor Roger Bouillon from the University of Leuven reported that more than a billion people of all ages worldwide needed to up their vitamin D intake.

The new study, published in the journal Diabetes Care (Vol. 29, pp. 650-656), used data from the Nurses Health Study, and related the vitamin D and calcium intake of 83,779 registered nurses to the incidence of type-2 diabetes.

None of the women had diabetes at the start of the study, and the average body mass index was 24 kilograms per square metre (meaning that very few of the women were overweight or obese, factors that are strongly associated with increased risk of diabetes).

After 20 years of follow-up, during which time dietary and supplementary intakes were measured using validated food frequency questionnaires every two to four years, the authors concluded: “A combined daily intake of more than 1,200 milligrams of calcium and more than 800 international units (IU) of vitamin D was associated with a 33 per cent lower risk of type-2 diabetes.”

Interestingly, lead researcher Anastassios Pitas, from the Tufts-New England Medical Center, found that dietary intake of vitamin D did not result in a statistically significant benefit. But women who consumed from that 400 IU vitamin D per day from supplements had a 13 per cent lower risk of diabetes, compared to women who consumed less than 100 IU per day.

Both dietary calcium and supplements were associated with significant decreased risks of type 2 diabetes, with women who had total daily intakes of calcium greater than 1,200 milligrams had a 21 per cent lower risk compared to women who had intakes less than 600 mg per day.

“For both vitamin D and calcium, intakes from supplements rather than from diet were significantly associated with a lower range of type 2 diabetes,” said Pittas.

The mechanism as to why vitamin D and calcium may reduce the risk of diabetes is not clear, but the researchers proposed that the two nutrients work together. Vitamin D facilitates calcium absorption in the intestine, while calcium is reported play a role in normalising glucose intolerance.

The researchers did not rule out a direct role of vitamin D, independent of calcium, noting that studies have reported that vitamin D insufficiency had been linked to insulin resistance and reduced function of pancreatic beta-cells.

Strengths of this study included the large-scale and long-term follow-up, but the authors note the inability of the study design to measure all the possible confounders. Also, no blood samples were taken to measure serum vitamin D levels.

“If these results are confirmed in prospective studies or in randomised trials, they will have important health implications because both of these interventions can be implemented easily and inexpensively to prevent type 2 diabetes,” concluded the researchers.

An estimated 19 million people are affected by diabetes in the EU 25, equal to four per cent of the total population. This figure is projected to increase to 26 million by 2030.

In the US, there are over 20 million people with diabetes, equal to seven per cent of the population. The total costs are thought to be as much as $132 billion, with $92 billion being direct costs from medication, according to 2002 American Diabetes Association figures.

BioFlavinoids (Rutin, Hesperidin and Quercetin)

This is the collective name given to rutin, hesperidin and quercetin. Bioflavonoids promote the non-specific actions of the immune system. Bioflavonoids are involved in maintaining the health of the collagen that holds the cells together by forming the basement membranes of cells, tissues, and cartilage.

Anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins can be used to treat a number of eye conditions such as cataracts, night blindness , diabetic retinopathy (progressive retina disease that is a complication of diabetes), and macular degeneration (a hereditary condition causing loss of vision). Hesperidin is useful in treating the complaints of menopause and in dealing with the viruses that cause herpes, the flu, and certain respiratory ailments. Hesperidin fights allergic reactions by blocking the release of histamine. Ellagic acid helps to inhibit cancer by neutralizing the effect of certain carcinogens.

Rutin (vitamin P1)

Rutin is a bioflavonoid that works with vitamin C and assists in reducing pain and intraocular pressure. Rutin may also help maintain levels of the biological antioxidant reduced glutathione. Rutin can be used to treat chronic venous insufficiency, glaucoma, hay fever, hemorrhoids, varicose veins , poor circulation, oral herpes, cirrhosis, stress, low serum calcium, and for cataracts.

Today I went back to the sites I used when I was researching high levels of copper and right there underneath my nose they suggested that a copper deficiency could cause a deficiency in rutin.

HOLY COW!! I wake up with a brand new set of eyes. I don’t know how else to describe it other than I can definitely feel that my eyes are stronger this morning. Looks like the test results are accurate! I’ll need to take a closer look at Methionine when I get a chance.

I love it when I discover something like this. I had never really heard or understood the importance of Lipoic acid before yesterday. Thank you Dr. Google once again!

I’m going through the results one amino acid at a time. I start with methionine and here’s a perfect reason why I love using Dr. Google for research.

Lipoic Acid

Features & Benefits

Gets its two sulfur atoms primarily from the sulfur-containing amino acid methionine. For this reason, a methionine deficiency can reduce the body’s ability to make lipoic acid.

Nerves: Protection of neurons (nerve cells) appears to be a major role of lipoic acid. In humans, amounts of 400-800 mg of ALA daily have been shown to promote healthy nerve function. The first study (known by its German initials DEKAN) involved 39 people given 800 mg lipoic acid orally and 34 people given placebo for four months. The people taking lipoic acid showed a significant improvement in heart rate variability, an objective measure of the autonomic nerves serving the heart. This improvement was significant compared to the control group. There were no notable changes in adverse symptoms between the two groups. Oral doses under 600 mg daily have not been effective for nerve health in several studies.

Eyes: Lipoic acid may also help maintain normal pressure of the fluid in the eye, according to one human study. A group of 19 people given 150 mg of lipoic acid orally for one month were shown to have a significant improvement in visual function compared to a control group treated with placebo. A dose of 75 mg daily was not effective in this study. Oxidation within the lens of the eye may contribute to declining clarity of vision with age. Lipoic acid has been shown to protect animal lenses from such damage. Human studies have not yet been performed confirming this benefit.

Nowhere in the eight page report is there any mention of something called Lipoic acid and the Naturopathic didn’t mention it either. If it helps with healthy nerve function and healthy eyes then this is something I have needed for a very long time. More research needed…

I had an early meeting downtown today and we needed to set the alarm for 5:00 AM. Now I’ve never been a morning person and I was slightly worried that I wouldn’t get up in time even with the early alarm.

How did it go? The alarm goes and the first thing I notice is no vibration. 5:15 AM and I’m up getting started and we get out of the house on time to make my early train. Despite getting up at that ungodly hour, my eyes were not itchy and watery like they usually are in the morning and today it was extra early so I think that was a really good test.

Now, if I can just raise my magnesium level…

Every morning for the longest time, whenever I woke up, I’d have tired, itchy eyes and usually it went away slowly throughout the morning. I always thought it was because I was tired and I was tired all the time. For the past two days since taking choline and inositol, my eyes feel like new in the mornings. It’s such a big obvious difference.

I don’t think it was riboflavin causing the dry itchy eyes of late that disappeared when I took B vitamins. Turns out that choline and inositol are included in my B complex supplement.

So now with the idea of a potassium deficiency, I grab three bananas on the way into work.

For the past couple of days I’ve had water itchy eyes and although I thought it was because of something I was taking, I now think it’s something that I need…

I’ve cut down on my vitamins and yesterday I only took calcium/magnesium. This morning I still had the problem so I took calcium/magnesium again but I also took B complex which I stopped taking on a regular basis a while back.

That seemed to do the trick so are we back to B vitamins again?

The calcium/magnesium does seem to have an effect on the vibration but yesterday morning I didn’t take my morning dosage and the cold hands returned around noon time which was a bit disappointing…

Today I’m back at work so my routine is a bit more stable. I’ve decided to take three doses of 300mg calcium/magnesium in the 1/1 ratio along with the phosphorus and vitamin D. No reason for the change just want to keep trying something different until I find something that works.

I also changed the zinc dosage from two doses of 50 mg to three doses of 30 mg. I didn’t take any niacin today as I’m still not convinced that it’s the cause of the vibration although I didn’t have any all weekend.

By the end of the work day the eyes aren’t as itchy and the stuffiness in my nose feels better than usual. I’ll keep doing this combination of minerals for sure!

The million dollar question….Will it have any effect on the vibration?

I’ve always been very confused as to why taking extra calcium would make the vibration stronger and today I still don’t have an answer. I’m wondering if the magnesium deficiency caused a high calcium ratio? What are the effects of low magnesium and the effect on calcium?


Elevated calcium levels are associated with arthritic / joint and vascular degeneration, calcification of soft tissue, hypertension and stroke, an increase in VLDL triglycerides, gastrointestinal disturbances, mood and depressive disorders, chronic fatigue, increased alkalinity, and general mineral imbalances.

All day long I’ve had really itchy dry eyes but I’m not sure if I caused it myself by rubbing them or if it’s something else. I stopped taking phosphorus thinking that might be causing the problem and I tried a bunch of different vitamins and minerals at different times today but nothing seemed to make a difference.

Hopefully it’s only because I’m very, very tired…

All throughout the long holiday weekend I didn’t get cold hands once. Let’s see what happens tomorrow when I return to work.

Manganese is a very hard mineral to find information about. Luckily, Dr. Google takes me to what I need:

“Manganese gives us strong nerves “, “eyes may itch and burn”

and the biggest clue of all:

“Dizziness comes from bending over or jumping up quickly from a lying position. Many assert that it feels as though their brain is loose, rolling from side to side or front to back when they lean over. Motion of a boat, car, train or airplane is often nauseating and fosters dizziness. “

I know that I’ve used that exact description within this very blog to describe my symptoms over a year ago when I was looking at B vitamin deficiencies. Incredible! I’ve also had the nauseating effect from the motion of a boat for years.

Found the entry from my blog on June 13th, 2006:

“I know I’ve had some very weird symptoms in my head almost from the beginning and it’s more of a feeling than a symptom. It feels like something is not quite right, like an imbalance, a heaviness. I noticed this weird feeling the most when I tilted my head back and held it there for a while. When I moved it back to normal, I have this feeling like the fluid in my brain was heavier than usual.”


Manganese is the brain and nerve food element. This critical mineral is stored in the body in conjunction with lecithin (a brain and nerve fat). It is impossible to maintain good health if this element is missing from the diet. Manganese is found in the bloodstream and like iron it helps carry oxygen from the lungs to the cells. Manganese acts upon the linings of the brain and cranium and upon the nerves and nerve fibers of the body. Manganese gives us strong nerves and coordinates thoughts; it is crucial for thought and action coordination. Memory is heightened by manganese and concentration becomes easier as nerve circuits are electrified. The intercommunication network of the brain is more efficient when manganese is supplied in ample quantities. It helps brain fibers make connections which encourages coordination of thought and purpose, it also improves eyesight benefiting both close up and long distance viewing of objects.


Nerve problems (stuttering, depression, worry) call for manganese in the diet. Low manganese can trigger epileptic seizures. Doctors at the Montreal Children’s hospital in Quebec Canada found that manganese deficiency in animals caused a loss of muscle control and rats born to manganese deficient mother had seizures.Manganese is important to regulating blood sugar and low blood sugar can also cause seizures. Diabetics have been shown to have only a fraction of the manganese of normal individuals.

Poor memory, absentmindedness, disjointed thought may indicate a shortage of manganese in the diet. Manganese deficient people often report that taste is altered. The tasted buds are erratic, ranging from an overly-sweet taste to oily, putrid, offensive tastes. Seemingly without reason food tastes oily, fatty or rancid.

Physical senses of the manganese impoverished are dulled and blunted. Spots appear before the eyes and the eyes may itch and burn. Ears detect feeble or far away noises that interfere with normal hearing. Dizziness comes from bending over or jumping up quickly from a lying position. Many assert that it feels as though their brain is loose, rolling from side to side or front to back when they lean over. Without manganese bones are susceptible to gout and bones and joints become painful. Rats fed a manganese deficient diet produced bones that were smaller and less mineral dense and more subject to fracture than those given sufficient amounts of this important trace mineral. Osteoporotic women had only a fraction of the manganese blood levels of women who were osteoporosis free. Manganese is a critical trace mineral when fighting bone mass density loss and should be added to the regimen when fighting osteoporosis.

Sufficient manganese helps nullify gout symptoms, especially at night. Extremely cold hands and feet, cold ankles or a cold area on the crown of the head are often indicative of a manganese deficiency.

The best natural food source of manganese is the Missouri black walnut. Many raw greens, nuts and seeds also contain minute traces of manganese. The manganese is stored in the oil of the nuts so cooking or processing removes this critical nutrient from most of these foods. A person does not need much of this mineral but it is a critical trace element that when missing from the diet will impact the health of the individual dramatically. Manganese works best when used in conjunction with zinc and copper.

My eyes have been bothering me still and it’s the constant watering, itchy all of the time and I have a new theory. When this happened before, I could trace it to the megadose of B vitamins.

That is not the problem this time as I’ve lowered the dosage but it is the same type of feeling. I think it’s the active form of B2 and B6 in combination with my enzymes that is causing the overdose. The purpose of the enzymes is to activate the vitamins but what happens if they are already active? I’ll switch back to the non-active form and keep taking my enzymes.

Since I’ve had two riboflavin injections I might as well stop taking the B vitamins and see if I get any of my “B vitamin” symptoms.

My daughter has picked the worse week to go through teething. For the past few nights my wife and I have been up all hours of the night trying to settle her. She’s okay if we are holding her but try and put her down to sleep? Forget it.

My eyes are burning this morning and I had tired itchy eyes before the lack of sleep. I’ve been using Visine for my bloodshot eyes but it really doesn’t help the itching. So it’s down to Shoppers to see if I can find any eye drops for tired eyes.

Once again, I find myself in the eye care isle and I’m reading every package to find something for tired eyes. Nope, nothing…everything is for dry itchy eyes so I’m guessing that tired eyes can cause the dry itching feeling. I check the ingredients from the visine package and it appears that a lot of the eye drops are the same except for one called “Refresh Lacri-Lube” which is an ocular lublicant rather than drops.

It’s a thick gel and it temporarily blurs my vision as I start rubbing it into my eyes. After about an hour they start feeling a lot better. They are still red of course but at least they aren’t itchy anymore.

I end up taking three of the new B complex capsules and I shouldn’t have taken the last one. I took it with a multivitamin and for most of the night, my eyes are really bloodshot, itchy and tired. Then I realize, three capsules plus the multivitamin equals 85 mg of Riboflavin. That’s way too much as it is based on weight and I already knew this but this new stuff must be more powerful to have this effect. I’ve been taking 400-500 mg per day with the other cheaper version and it was never like this.

Riboflavin deficiency can be treated with supplemental riboflavin (0.5 mg/kg body weight per day) until the symptoms disappear.

My Calculation: 186 lbs equals 84.36 kg therefore I should be taking 42 kg a day.

I won’t take any tomorrow and get back on track for Wednesday.

My eyes have been so try and itchy lately it’s driving me nuts. I’ve used my visine eyes drops five times today. Since I think it’s the Riboflavin deficiency causing it, I wonder if I can purchase eye drops with Riboflavin as an ingredient?

I Google away and discover that there is one called “Tears Again” Liposome spray. So I go to Shoppers and they have so many eye drop solutions but they don’t have Liposome spray. I check the ingredients of every eye drop solution and not one of them contains Riboflavin. Not that they need to but it’s just an observation.

Vitamins and Nutrients

There have been many large scale studies to show the effectiveness of vitamins on reducing the incidence of cataracts. A Canadian studied showed that patients over the age of 55 who consumed vitamin C and E supplements reduced their risk of developing cataracts by over 50%. A double blind study involving 30,000 patients performed at the University of Helsinki also demonstrated the beneficial effects of vitamins.

Glutathione Loss of Glutathione occurs in all forms of cataracts. Since 1912, researches have shown that reduced levels of Glutathione precedes the development of cataracts. With increasing age the levels of Glutathione content of the human lens decreases by 4 to 14 times. Glutathione supplements are available but it is questioned weather this large molecule can pass through the digestive tract. N-acetyl-cysteine, a stable amino acid, has been shown to raise the levels of Glutathione. Cysteine is found in protein rich eggs. Completely avoiding eggs may rob the body of this amino acid which may have anti cataract properties.

The lens of the human eye is bathed in a vitamin C rich aqueous solution which is 30 times more concentrated than the human blood. It appears that this vitamin C acts as an ultraviolet filter preventing the harmful effects of ultraviolet light. With age the levels of vitamin C begin to decrease and this may contribute to the formation of the senile cataract. There are several studies which have shown that high dosages of vitamin C (1000 mg/ day) will reverse the development of some cataracts.

Riboflavin helps to make a substance called flavine adenine dinuceotide which is necessary for the production of Glutathione. High levels of Glutathione have been shown to keep the human lens clear and prevent the development of cataracts. In one study, 81 percent of patients with cataracts were deficient in riboflavin.

Riboflavin:The Dose Makes the Poison

Naturally occurring riboflavin found in our skin and eyes has been implicated to play a pivotal role in many of the damaging effects of UV light exposure. This includes damage to our skin’s connective tissue, the induction of DNA lesions known to promote the development of skin cancer and aging, and the impairment of mitochondria functioning resulting in cell death. High doses of riboflavin have also been shown to induce damage to retina cells in the eyes of research animals.

Surprisingly, while the combination of riboflavin and light has been studied because of its adverse effects on cells grown in culture and exposed to light—and riboflavin and light have been used as a model for inducing things as diverse as liver dysfunction, cataracts and mutations—the nutrition industry has failed to heed the warning that damage may be caused by high doses of riboflavin supplements.

This is partly due to confusion because a diet deficient in riboflavin is a risk factor for things like cataracts, while at the same time, the combination of riboflavin and light is often used by scientists to cause cataracts in animal research. As always, the dose makes the poison, and this means that if you take nutritional supplements you should make sure you consume an adequate amount of riboflavin daily, rather than an excess of riboflavin.

The human requirement for riboflavin is less than 2 milligrams a day, but many common vitamin supplements contain 10s or 100s of milligrams. There is little (if any) scientific justification for taking supplements of riboflavin greatly in excess of the known dietary requirement. However, there is a lot of scientific evidence and speculation that the combination of abnormally high blood, eye and skin levels of riboflavin, combined with a lifetime of sun exposure, may have serious negative consequences, and actually cause the damage we are trying to prevent. The combination of sunlight and abnormally high tissue levels of riboflavin from excess supplementation is a toxic combination that should be avoided.

Yesterday I took a smaller dose of Benfotamine and today I only took one with my dinner. I’m going to go back to using acidophilus for my B vitamins and not use Benfotamine at all unless I have to. My new system for absorption overnight seems to be working.

I still have the vibration but my eyes are a lot better today. I think I was taking too much Benfotamine and it was actually making things worse. The iridologist wanted me to take 6 a day so I wasn’t doing anything I wasn’t told to do.

What’s the point of taking 6 a day when it’s a fat soluble vitamin? That doesn’t make any sense!!

I’ve managed to look up every kind of vitamin/mineral deficiency known to man and I have a new theory. The one symptom I’ve had for years is my chapped lips and there happens to be a link with a Riboflavin Deficiency.

I’ve come across this theory before of course but I’ve been taking B complex now for months with no results. I think I’ve been looking too hard for the answer…

A vibration is a symptom of Riboflavin Deficiency. But I’ve been taking B complex for months without any improvement?

The symptoms of riboflavin deficiency include:

Swelling and fissuring of the lips (cheilosis)

Red, itchy eyes that are sensitive to light

The nervous symptoms of riboflavin deficiency include:

Decreased sensitivity to touch, temperature, and vibration

Riboflavin is required for the processing of dietary fats, carbohydrates, and proteins to convert these nutrients to energy. When riboflavin deficiency is actually detected, it is often associated with low consumption of milk, chronic alcoholism, or chronic diarrhea.

I stopped drinking milk when the Naturopath said it wasn’t good for me and I stopped eating beef when I read about the hormone injections. Two foods that contain riboflavin.

Have I become my own worst enemy trying to improve my diet?

I’ve always had dry itchy eyes and I thought it was from lack of sleep or my allergies. Since I started taking vitamin A, my eyes have improved so much but they still water up and are still tired and itchy. I think it’s a Riboflavin Deficiency. The only problem with that is there is nothing that mentions the weird pinching nerve sensation in my head.

Let’s try an experiment. I look up the foods that have the highest amount of Riboflavin… Calf’s LIVER!
