I have a feeling that my potassium is still very high and here’s something that would certainly suggest that they are.

Adrenals and high Potassium

When the adrenals become fatigued and unable to release adequate amounts of aldosterone or cortisol, potassium levels rise, sodium and blood sugar levels fall, body fluid volume decreases and hypotension and dehydration can result.

In theory, because of the known effects of licorice, there may be some benefits of licorice for high potassium levels caused by a condition called hypoaldosteronism. There is early evidence in humans in support of this use. However, research is preliminary and a qualified health care provider should supervise treatment.

I’ll add calcium and licorice root and see if that makes any difference.

Copper And Other Mineral Imbalances As A Cause Of Allergies

Minerals play many important roles in regulating body chemistry. Not only are minerals required for glandular activity, but they serve to regulate the nervous system and every other system of the body. Toxic amounts of any nutrient will displace other vital nutrients and by doing so, result in various metabolic dysfunctions, including a wide variety of allergies.

Research reveals that copper toxicity is a major contributing cause of allergies, particularly those allergies associated with low cortisol levels. Low cortisol levels result in a chronic inflammatory process. Allergies occur because copper, in excess, deplete vitamin C, folic acid, zinc and other nutrient reserves that are required by the pituitary and adrenal glands. An excess of tissue copper also impairs liver function, resulting in a wide variety of food allergies.

Copper toxicity also results in an over-stimulation of the nervous system which leads to alterations of the pituitary-adrenal axis. Copper toxicity is often involved as a principal cause of brain, or cerebral allergies.

A copper deficiency frequently results in a lowering of tissue calcium levels, which serves to contribute to the excess histamine-type of allergies.

Many individuals suffer from a copper imbalance which is not detectable on a standard blood serum test. Copper toxicity can be identified from a hair mineral analysis, where it is indicated by either a high copper level, a high calcium level, a very low copper level, or a low sodium to potassium ratio which indicates adrenal burnout.

Many times, a food allergy problem can be traced to the relatively high copper content of certain foods. Common foods that are high in copper are wheat, corn, soybeans, chocolate and shellfish. Perhaps it is more than coincidence that these particular foods are common causes of food allergies.

Allergies And Behavior

Another class of allergies is commonly referred to as central nervous system allergies. These are reactions that detrimentally affect one’s emotions and behavior. The causes of these allergies are, in many instances, the same as those discussed above. The principal difference is that they specifically affect brain function, so that reactions are particularly noticed in one’s behavior and attitude.

Biochemical mechanisms primarily responsible for brain allergies include;

• Excessive histamine release in the brain due to an elevated copper level, or zinc deficiency.

• Alterations of vitamin, or other mineral levels in the brain due to foods, or exposure to toxic metals.

• Changes in blood sugar levels due to diet, stress, or adrenal insufficiency. The brain is extremely sensitive to both low and high blood sugar levels.

• Specific neuro-chemical effects of food additives such as Nutra-Sweet which contains phenylalanine, a neuro-active amino acid.

In the majority of cases of central nervous system allergies, we find that a copper imbalance plays a vital role. Research confirms that a copper toxicity problem causes a zinc deficiency, which in turn may result in a rise in tissue sodium levels. A high sodium level, in turn, is responsible for many of the symptoms associated with brain allergies.

Common symptoms of brain allergies in children are hyperactivity, learning disorders and concentration deficit problems. In adults, a high sodium level frequently manifests itself as manic-depressive disorders, hyperactivity, anxiety and various phobias.

Central nervous system allergies are handled the same way as other allergies. Imbalances in body chemistry need to be identified and corrected. The hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis needs to be restored to normalcy. Offending foods have to be avoided for a time. Digestion also needs to be improved.

Allergies As A Symptom Of Burnout

A common hair analysis pattern noted in allergy patients is a low sodium/potassium ratio (less than 2.5:1). We call this a burnout pattern, because it is associated with adrenal exhaustion.

Allergies are a common sign of adrenal burnout. The exhausted adrenal glands simply cannot provide sufficient cortical hormones required to prevent allergic reactions.

Another common hair analysis pattern in allergy sufferers is what we refer to as an all-four-low mineral pattern. The first four minerals on the chart (calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium) are below normal accepted values. This too, is a burnout pattern, one in which the person is under unrelenting stress, thus preventing recovery of the adrenal glands. Allergies usually accompany this particular mineral pattern.

A final hair analysis mineral pattern that is often seen when allergies are present is that both sodium and potassium levels are rock bottom, below 6 mg% for sodium and below 4 mg% for potassium. Again, this is a mineral pattern commonly associated with severe adrenal exhaustion.

Very often, in order to correct an allergy problem it is necessary to correct the underlying burnout condition. Otherwise we are just relieving symptoms and the associated allergies will never be permanently eliminated.

General Nutritional Recommendations For Allergies

Avoiding refined sugars and carbohydrates reduces allergies in a category of individuals who are classified as sugar and simple carbohydrate intolerant. Eating sugar, or simple carbohydrates in any form, places undue stress upon the adrenal glands, which are forced to respond to the sudden excess of sugar in the blood. The result is increased wear and tear on these glands, as well as on the liver and pancreas. The ingestion of sugar, especially in susceptible individuals, also upsets calcium, copper and other mineral levels, eventually causing a further alteration of body chemistry.

Refined carbohydrates lack fiber, which serves to slow the absorption of sugars into the blood stream. They also lack the essential trace elements desperately required for optimal adrenal gland support.

Eating foods appropriate for one’s oxidation type is particularly important. For the slow oxidizer, this means avoiding high-fat diets and eating adequate amounts of protein. Increasing one’s meat protein intake is often difficult for certain slow oxidizers, particularly those with a copper toxicity problem. Avoiding, or limiting dairy products is often helpful for the slow oxidizer. Dairy products are high in fat content which serves to further slow down an already slow rate of metabolism. Many slow oxidizers are also unable to tolerate milk sugar.

For the fast oxidizer, dietary fats are essential and in some cases increasing one’s intake of fats will rapidly reduce allergy symptoms related to stress-related, excessive adrenal gland activity.

Avoidance of chemical additives is suggested for everyone, but particularly allergy sufferers. Even though there may not be an allergy to any specific chemical, the body still has to detoxify these chemicals, adding to the burden on the liver and the endocrine glands.

The same principle holds true for environmental chemicals, hair sprays, room deodorants, chemical cleaners and other toxic substances that we are exposed to on a daily basis. Minimizing exposure to the above allergens reduce the burden on the liver and glandular system.

Conclusion

Our research indicates that the reason allergies are so common today is largely due to an adrenal burnout-induced imbalanced body chemistry. The body has become hypersensitive to foods and environmental chemicals, which cause many types of allergic reactions.

Body chemistry has become impaired due to inadequate diets, stress and environmental pollution. Today, children are born with toxic metal poisoning and nutrient deficiencies, which indicates that even if an individual eats well, they may still be afflicted with allergies.

Last night was very weird. I felt no difference by not taking my regular vitamins but my allergies were very strong. I had a constant runny nose and sneezing. They haven’t been this strong since I stopped eating the microwaved food and I didn’t have any today or yesterday.

Is there a possible link to me not taking the B vitamins?

Adrenal  Stress and Allergies

Allergic reactions typically have an adrenal component. Most allergies involve
the release of histamine and other pro-inflammatory substances (substances that
produce inflammation).

Cortisol, one of the primary hormones produced by the adrenal glands, is a
strong anti-inflammatory (a substance that reduces inflammation).
In fact, the amount of cortisol circulating in the blood is the key factor in
controlling the level of inflammatory reactions in the body.

For this reason proper adrenal function plays an important role in mediating the
histamine release and inflammatory reactions that produce the symptoms
experienced with allergies.

With Adrenal Fatigue there is more of a tendency to experience allergies.
The more histamine that is released, the more cortisol it takes to control the
inflammatory response and the harder the adrenals have to work to produce more
cortisol.

The harder the adrenals have to work, the more fatigued they become and the less
cortisol they produce, allowing histamine to inflame the tissues more. This
vicious circle can lead to progressively deeper Adrenal Fatigue as well as to
larger allergic reactions.

I’ll take the B vitamins today and see if I have any allergy symptoms.

2 – 150 mg Magnesium Citrate with 250 mg Calcium
3 – 500 mg Vitamin C

When vitamin B deficiency becomes chronic (long-lasting), other problems can occur, including troubles with your adrenal system. The adrenal glands serve many purposes, but in relation to this topic, they are the back up system for making energy. When there is a chronic lack of vitamin B complex then the adrenal glands are called upon to produce quick energy by injecting certain hormones like adrenaline into your system so that you can cope with life. If this goes on for a long time, then the adrenal glands become impaired or worn out, leading to even more health problems.

The Naturopath pointed out to me for the first time that my adrenals were overworked. But despite the fact that I told her that the acidophilus stopped the weird nerve pinching in my head, a vitamin B deficiency may have been mentioned but it was decided to focus on the candida diet. I’ve looked at the adrenal symptoms before with the link to cortisol. It will be interesting to take a look at the hormone test results on July 1st.

Do You Have Adrenal Fatigue?

When the adrenal glands are not functioning optimally, you can have a condition that is known as adrenal fatigue, or adrenal exhaustion. Adrenal fatigue often develops after periods of intense or lengthy physical or emotional stress, when over stimulation if the glands leave them unable to meet your body’s needs.

Some other names for the syndrome include non-Addison’s hypoadrenia, sub-clinical hypoadrenia, hypoadrenalism, and neurasthenia.

Symptoms include:

  • excessive fatigue and exhaustion
  • non-refreshing sleep (you get sufficient hours of sleep, but wake fatigued)
  • overwhelmed by or unable to cope with stressors
  • feeling rundown or overwhelmed
  • craving salty and sweet foods
  • you feel most energetic in the evening
  • a feeling of not being restored after a full night’s sleep or having sleep disturbances
  • low stamina, slow to recover from exercise
  • slow to recover from injury, illness or stress
  • difficulty concentrating, brain fog
  • poor digestion
  • low immune function
  • food or environmental allergies
  • premenstrual syndrome or difficulties that develop during menopause
  • consistent low blood pressure
  • extreme sensitivity to cold

Six symptoms of adrenal exhaustion and I’ve had these for years. In fact, I was at the inlaws the other night. It was after ten o’clock and I felt wide awake. It’s weird but everytime I’ve been at their house until late, I’ve always felt very tired and my wife’s mother always made a comment on it. Even though I’m still lacking in the B vitamins, there was definately a difference on that night and I think it was because of the vitamins.

And another story that I remember. I’d say about ten years ago I was working a security job in an office building. A nothing type job really as I spent most of my time reading the paper. But there was one day that I recall waking up and I felt refreshed and not tired at all. I don’t know what happened or what I ate, but I still remember the great feeling when I woke up. I’ve never been able to have that same feeling since and now I’m thinking it was probably a B deficiency. I’ve always had a non-refreshing type sleep. I was getting sufficient hours of sleep, but I woke fatigued. I have no clue why it was so different on that one particular morning.

Here’s another one. My wife and I went to visit her grandmother in the hospital last summer. There had been a fire alarm so the elevators were not in service. My wife at this point was about seven months pregnant and we had to get to the fifth floor. After the second floor I was so tired and exhausted my wife was ahead of me and she made the joke that a pregnant women of seven months could do better than me. I even had to stop for a little rest a few times. We made it to the fifth floor but man was I worn out. For some reason, I just accepted this as normal and thought I needed to get more sleep an or exercise.

And actually, I’ve always had a very hard time getting up in the mornings. I’ve even made jokes about it at work. I could never work any shift other than the 9-5 because getting to work any earlier than that would kill me.

Adrenal Imbalance:

Overall, low adrenal cortisol production contributes to symptoms of fatigue, allergies, chemical sensitivity, and sugar craving. Low cortisol can also exacerbate symptoms of low thyroid. Cortisol is essential for thyroid function at the tissue level.

Adrenals:

The adrenals are our energy and stress system. When we are under a great deal of stress, we will usually blow out our B-complex vitamins which in turn will eventually blow out our adrenal systems, as it is this system that takes over when we are too tired to function, and yet we continue to push ourselves. When your B-vitamins and adrenals have been blown out, symptoms will begin to appear. At first you may feel more tired than usual, eventually looking for a nap in the afternoon. You may find you cannot handle the littlest stress in your life and eventually, you may find you are not able to sleep at night even though you are very exhausted. This deficiency becomes overwhelming to the body and it seems as though you are on a merry-go-round. You are very tired, but cannot sleep, and so you become even more tired and drained. In order to help heal the adrenals, it is imperative to reduce stress in your life as much as possible.

So I have six symptoms of an adrenal imbalance due to Cortisol.

  1. Elevated triglycerides
  2. Fatigue
  3. Hair loss
  4. Allergies
  5. Sugar craving
  6. Cold body temperature
  7. Heart palpitations?

The urine test I had months ago showed that my adrenals were extremely overworked and I know for sure that I am low in B-complex vitamins.

Tomorrow, I will drop off the saliva sample to the Naturopath.

Today is my follow up appointment with the naturopath. Yesterday was my last dose of the ultra flora pills. I didn’t think it was making a difference so I won’t bother getting a second batch. Besides, it’s forty dollars a bottle!

In the waiting area I grab a book from the shelf called “Natural Cures They Don’t Want You To Know About” by Kevin Trudeau. I remember my wife telling me about one of his infomercials and we had a brief discussion about it a while back. So I start reading the first chapter and was blown away with what I read. The naturopath then calls me into her office and I put the book down.

My basal temperature readings for the past week are as follows:

Tuesday- 36.37

Wednesday- 36.02

Thursday- 36.15

Friday- 36.25

Saturday- 35.95

I compare them to the last set of readings and they are not much different. I still have the cold body temperature. Interesting but what does it mean?

We talk about the effects of the Candida diet. No real improvement and still vibrating. I also mention about the mild chest pain when I took the B complex vitamins and she said there should be no side effects so I mention sympathy pregnancy. She tells me of a hormone test and shows me a chart of symptoms for each of the three hormones they test for. Estrogen, Andogen and Cortisol.

The Cortisol Deficiency symptoms are interesting. From the ten listed, I appear to have five (*) of them and possibly seven.

Could the stress be the internal vibrations? The doctor said in my first appointment that internal vibrations are usually caused by stress.

The test is expensive so I tell her I’ll think about it. We are only two months away now and why spend the money if I don’t need to. I’ve waited this long so what’s a little bit longer? She recommended another test that would be a lot cheaper. A Hair Analysis Test.

Drug and chemical residues, toxins, heavy metals, and radiation present in the body embed in hair fiber protein as it grows. Hair has the advantage of long-term memory. It’s a permanent record, like tree rings. A three-inch strand of human hair will give a six-month history of what’s going on in the body since head hair grows at a rate of about a half an inch a month.

Clinical research indicates that hair levels of specific elements, particularly toxic elements, correlate with pathological disorders. For such elements, the levels in the hair provide a superior indication of body stores opposed to blood or urine specimens. This is one reason hair element tests are preferred for drug testing and forensics.

Within polluted environments, accurate decisions on how to clean up toxic spills cannot be made without performing soil and water analyses of the effected area. So it is with a hair analysis for the human body. The hair analysis identifies the root of illness. The key to a good hair analysis is in the interpretation – a lost art amid traditional medicine, yet a critical step in disease recovery.

Next week is my appointment with the gastro specialist. Let’s try the Hair Analysis in the meantime. She snips a sample of my hair and she’ll call me when the results are back.

I start googling again and discover a link between low adrenals and how the adrenal gland is responsible for the production of cortisol. Now I’m back to thinking it’s all about sympathy pregnancy and only one thing can happen to see if the symptoms go away…
