Mystery of the Internal Vibration

Entry for October 24, 2007

Again today I’m still having problems with cold hands in the late afternoon. Yesterday I noticed that my candida was worse after drinking some milk. Can’t say I’ve ever noticed that before but of course, there is lactose in milk which is a type of sugar… I suppose that the candida could be causing the cold hands? No idea. I just know something is wrong and whatever I do doesn’t seem to have an effect.

Woke up today and I can feel a real improvement with the candida. My eyes feel a lot better too. I think the Arginine and the Glycine are working and definitely something I was low in.

I’ve been casually looking around for a new job. I’m not serious about quitting my job or for any paticualar reason but every now and again I like to see what’s out there. So I’ve sent my resume of to a few places this week and we’ll see what happens…

I’ve been doing so much reading about the different functions of amino acids that I’m going to try Arginine again for the immune system. I took it for the first time last month and took it until I ran out. It had a good effect on the candida so I’m going to get it again. Maybe I didn’t do it long enough.

I’m convinced that amino acids are so much more important than vitamins or minerals. They all work together of course but I find it all fascinating how each one provides a different role in the body but you never really hear anything about them.

A multivitamin doesn’t contain amino acids and yet they are so important. I can still hear my doctor telling me that all I needed was a good multivitamin and suggested Centrum. EEEK!

ARGININE (Non-Essential) L-Arginine is essential in muscle metabolism and tissue generation and regeneration. In the body it creates nitric oxide, which is an important catalyst for healthy dilation of blood vessels, circulation and blood flow. Studies have shown that Arginine improves immune responses to bacteria, viruses and tumor cells, promotes wound healing and regeneration of the liver and the release of growth hormones. Arginine is highly concentrated in the skin and connective tissue and helps keep blood-vessel tissue elastic. Arginine also helps to remove ammonia from the body as part of the urea cycle.

Arginine is gaining popularity as a treatment for high cholesterol. Studies with animals and humans suggest that it may improve coronary blood flow and lower cholesterol levels through its antioxidant properties. Arginine Pyroglutamate moves easily across the blood/brain barrier where it releases Arginine, acts as a slow release Glutamine, and increases acetylcholine.

Another amino acid that I’m interested in is Glycine. In fact Glycine is as much as one third of the amino acid content of collagen. WOW! Again, I’ve taken this before and I knew about the collagen link but 1/3?? That’s significant.

Glycine is one – third of total amino acid content of collagen followed by hydroxyproline and proline account for another one-third of amino acid content of collagen. Hydroxyproline is exclusive to collagen and due to this reason to estimate collagen normally hydroxyproline is estimation is done.

Because I had my appendix out when I was seven years old and my on going battle with candida, I found this article very, very interesting…

Is Your Appendix Really a Useless Organ?

Your appendix, long touted by doctors to have no apparent purpose, turns out to be good for something after all. Surgeons and immunologists from Duke University Medical School believe your appendix produces and protects the good bacteria in your gut.

There are more bacteria in your body than cells, and much of it is used to help you digest food. However, if your good bacteria dies, as the result of cholera or dysentery for instance, your appendix appears to restore good bacteria to your gut.

Your appendix acts like a “bacteria factory” that “cultivates good germs,” according to the study’s authors.

They pointed out that this function is not needed in industrialized society, because if your gut flora dies you can easily repopulate it with germs from other people. In the past, however, the appendix came in handy when disease epidemics affected entire regions, and the good bacteria was not easy to repopulate.

In modern times, appendixes may still be useful in less developed countries.

If your appendix becomes infected, it can lead to death, which is why surgeons have removed them routinely for generations. Even with the new theory for your appendix’s purpose, the researchers said you should have yours removed if it becomes inflamed.

About 300 to 400 Americans die, and about 321,000 are hospitalized, due to appendicitis each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

—–

Dr. Mercola’s Comment:

It is shocking to me that anyone ever believed your appendix has no purpose. Rest assured, there is a purpose for every organ in your body, even the ones that modern medicine can’t figure out.

So please don’t ever fall for the advice to have an organ removed “because it has no purpose.”

There are times when it is necessary to do so, because if you fail to remove it you will die from massive infection. This can be true for appendicitis or an infected gallbladder. But there just isn’t ever ANY reason to remove an appendix just because an abdominal surgery is being performed.

It makes perfect sense that your appendix may help regulate your intestinal good bacteria. For every cell in your body you have about ten bacteria in your intestine, or about 60 trillion bacteria. This bacteria has a very profound influence on your digestive health, your weight, and your overall health.

Hopefully, now that a function for the appendix has been formally recognized, surgeons will stop removing healthy appendixes for no reason. The notion that your appendix is useless has been so widely held for so long that many surgeons actually will remove your appendix when performing abdominal surgeries for other reasons!

However, I do not agree with the researchers conclusions that your appendix is unnecessary in the modern world because, as they say, you can easily repopulate the good bacteria in your gut.

Why?

Because your good bacteria is constantly being assaulted by antibiotics, chlorinated water, birth control pills, stress, sugar, and a host of other environmental factors.

Ideally, your gut should contain a ratio of 85 percent good bacteria to 15 percent non-beneficial bacteria, but the factors I listed above have actually caused this ratio to reverse in many people.

So there is clearly a shortage of good bacteria in many people, which is why I often recommend that you use a high-quality probiotic as an “insurance policy” that your body is balanced with good strains of bacteria, particularly if you don’t lead a perfectly healthy lifestyle.

So there is just no way to know what far-reaching and subtle effects your appendix has on the way your body functions. At least one negative side effect has already been uncovered from having your appendix removed (called an appendectomy) — an increased risk of Crohn’s disease.

Appendectomy has long been a controversial surgery when done electively. It’s possible, in fact, that 30 percent of controversial surgeries such as appendectomy are unnecessary.

Noticed another slight improvement with the candida today. So was it Acetyl-Carnitine or Theanine? That’s the one problem with wanting to take so many things…

While researching the amino acids I came across a health bulletin board where someone suggested reading a book called “The Edge Effect” and something called the “Braverman Test”. Basically, it’s a questionaire that can determine deficiencies in each neurotransmitter. This could be what I’ve been looking for but what is it exactly? Dr. Google?

The Braverman Nature Assessment

Dr. Braverman’s twenty-six years of medical education, training and clinical practice have focused on the brain’s overall health. Many common conditions have their origins in brain chemical imbalances. Each of the four main lobes of the brain has a primary biochemical, called a neurotransmitter that is responsible for a specific brain function. When you are ill, physician prescribe a medication, which restores a specific brain chemical to restore health. Natural substances however can do the same thing, because each of the primary brain neurotransmitter has a precursor, which the body used to manufacture each of the four brain chemicals. That is what prompted Dr. Braverman to develop his own line of nutrient-precursors that target each of these four brain chemicals.

Dominant
Section 1A = Dopamine Nature
Section 2A = Acetylcholine Nature
Section 3A = GABA Nature
Section 4A = Serotonin Nature

Deficient
Section 1B = Dopamine Nature
Section 2B = Acetylcholine Nature
Section 3B = GABA Nature
Section 4B = Serotonin Nature

One full day taking Glycine and once again, I can feel a slight difference with the candida. I’m starting slow by taking one teaspoon in the morning and again at night. I can feel the benefits from it but it also gives me a weird feeling whenever I take it. Almost like it has an effect on my magnesium. So I’ve been adding one or two 250 mg of magnesium during the day. Not sure why it has the effect or maybe it’s because my copper is still low enough to effect the magnesium.

I guess I really need to focus on taking the 3 mg of copper a day along with some higher dosages of magnesium and build those up for a while…

A couple of days with the liquid amino and I can’t say I feel a difference. Once again, I’m impatient for results and probably need to take it a while longer. I will say one thing through… I’ve felt the positive effect that Arginine has on my candida. Another deficiency. So here’s my theory on Candida and all the web sites and supplements that suggest they work.

If someone has Candida, there is an underling deficiency. The worse the candida, the more deficiencies exist. This includes all Vitamins, all Minerals and all Amino Acids.

I’m of the opinion now that the amino complex might be the same as a multivitamin whereas you can’t solve a deficiency unless you focus on a single amino acid.

WOW! The garlic works this time. You are supposed to change up the anti-fungals ever few weeks so this is fantastic. Another thing that seems to work better this time? Taking acidophilus after the antifungals. I’ve always read that you should replace your intestinal flora as you kill off the candida. I never noticed any difference…until today.

These all have to be clues that my minerals are somewhat balanced…but the candida still exists.

No vibration!

I found some garlic supplements that I stopped using the first time around because they didn’t seem to have an effect on the candida. I’ll try adding that to see if it works this time.

I think I took too much of something. My stomach is in knots and although I’m not 100% sure what caused it, it could be either the taurine or the glutathione. I have a feeling it was the glutathione because although the bottle said one a day, I took two after reading about the safe dosages. My dosage was only 50 milligrams.

ADVERSE REACTIONS (Glutathione)

Oral doses of up to 600 milligrams daily are well tolerated. There are no reports of adverse reactions

It’s an awful feeling to have so I’ll cut down on the supplements tomorrow and do some more research. One thing I’ve noticed lately is the supplements for candida don’t seem to be working as well as in the past. I know they always tell you to rotate them with different types of antifungals so I’ll check my supply because I know I have a couple of things that didn’t work the first time so this time we’ll see if it makes a difference.

More research and I discover that Taurine is usually low in people who have candida. Not only that, but it’s low in people who have a zinc deficiency and can cause anxiety.

Taurine Deficiency – Possible Causes

There are many reasons your body could be low in taurine. Your body does not make enough taurine due to a deficiency in one or more of the following:

  • Cysteine and methionine (amino acids that make taurine in your body).
  • Pyridoxal-5-phosphate (the active form of vitamin B6).
  • Zinc (deficiency in zinc is common with elevated mercury levels).
  • Vitamin A.
  • Candida. If you have this systemic fungal infection, it produces an amino acid, beta-alanine, which competes with taurine for reabsorption in the kidney.

WHAT IS TAURINE?

Taurine is an amino acid which plays a major role in the brain as an “inhibitory” neurotransmitter & neuromodulator. It is similiar in structure to the amino acids GABA & L-Glycine, which are also neuroinhibitory. This means it helps to calm or stabilize an excited brain.

Taurine stabilizes nerve cell membranes thus depressing the firing of brain cells & dampening the nerve cell action of the excitatory amino acids, glutamate, aspartate, & quinolinate.

Taurine acts by regulating the sodium & potassium concentration in the cells & the magnesium level between the cells. This has everything to do with the electrical activity of the cells & subsequent communication between cells.

By this mechanism, it has anti-anxiety & anti-convulsant activity. It has also been found useful in some cases of migraine, insomnia, agitation, restlessness, irritability, alcoholism, obsessions, depression, hypomania/mania.

Dosage is from 500 mg twice daily to a total of 5000 mg daily in 3-4 divided doses, though I rarely recommend that high a dose. The total ideal body pool of taurine for adults is 12,000- 18,000 mg.

Since taurine also affects the hypothalamus to help regulate body temperature, a higher dose can decrease your temperature & give chilliness, so be aware of that.

Taurine also plays a role in memory & increases the level of a memory neurotransmitter, acetylcholine, in the brain (in animal studies).

Woke up with the vibration…

I’m not sure how that’s possible because I’m literally swimming in niacin these past few days. That can only mean one thing: I may be low in niacin, but it’s not the cause of the vibration.

My two main symptoms are Candida and the vibration/anxiety.

So using candida as a starting point, I come across the following article:

Glutathione

As Candida albicans spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract and colonizes in other areas of the body, it produces various toxins. These toxins can impair health by reducing the body’s supply of white blood cells, which are needed by the immune system to properly fend off infectious bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other pathogens. Candida albicans toxins also inhibit the body’s ability to manufacture antioxidants, including glutathione, an enzyme that is important for liver detoxification and cellular respiration. As a result of these negative effects caused by the unchecked spread of Candida albicans, symptoms of candida can manifest in many different ways, mimicking other disease conditions and negatively impacting many areas of your body.

Glutathione, an amino acid is low in people with candida. Okay, I’ve tried amino acids before but maybe I’ll have a different result now that I’ve taken care of the mineral deficiencies.

Here’s some more information about how a Glutathione deficiency can effect the nervous system:

“A deficiency of Glutathione first affects the nervous system, causing such symptoms as lack of coordination, mental disorders, tremors, and difficulty maintaining balance. These problems are believed to be due to development of lesions in the brain.”

Glutathione can be depleted by a host of agents working alone or together. Environmental pollutants, tobacco smoke, alcohol abuse, acetaminophen, mercury from dental fillings, and a sustained immune response against persistent toxins, can all rob you of this most important health asset. Mercury can impair your body’s ability to synthesize Glutathione by normal means.

The liver produces glutathione from the amino acids cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine. Glutathione deficiency results in early aging and in the loss of coordination, balance, tremors, and mental disorders.

Glutathione levels decline with age and if not corrected will accelerate the aging process; so supplementation is important. But the assimilation of supplemental oral glutathione is questionable. Instead it is best to supplement with cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine and have the body use those raw materials to manufacture needed glutathione.

Recently I’ve been trying the different candida supplements that never worked the first time round. Today I switched from the Caprylic acid and grapefruit seed extract to something called “Candida Clear” and the results were much better. I guess it has a little of everything… Here’s what it says:

Candida Clear is a combination of herbal ingredients which synergistically help to support a healthy balance of intestinal bacteria. The beneficial bacteria that normally populate the gut assist in the digestion of food, produce certain vitamins and promote detoxification processes.

Supplement facts:
Serving size – 2 capsules

Biotin – 2mg (2000mcg)
Magnesium (from magnesium caprylate) – 46mg
Caprylic acid (from magnesium caprylate) – 500mg
Pau ‘D Arco (bark) – 300mg
Black walnut (hull) – 300mg
Oregano oil – 200mg

Candida Clear by NOW Foods. Perhaps the most important part of this formula is the high potencies of 100% pure Oregano Oil, which is naturally sprayed onto the vitamin and herbal base. This unique combination has been carefully formulated to rid the body of candida albicans the most common, problematic strain of yeast. (Our favorite because of it’s effectiveness.)

Woke up with the vibration…

This morning it’s back to work so I added some extra magnesium just in case. I sat down at my desk and started my daily routine and it hit me like a tonne of bricks. The magnesium loss must be because my copper is low. This is fantastic!!!!

I actually have some homeopathic copper on me so I take that with 1 magnesium and I could feel the difference. I should’ve known it because of the candida supplements were working, the minerals were balanced afterall. It makes sense because I’m been taking a high dosage of zinc everyday since the beginning of February. Hard to believe but it’s been over six months of treatment so maybe I did go too far? I had no real sign that the zinc had been corrected.

Starting tomorrow, I’ll take the candida supplements along with my multivitamin and a calcium/magnesium.

This is great news! Magnesium is my friend again.

After the second banana I’m starting to feel the effects of candida. I’m clearly not ready for bananas yet… This is disappointing because I thought I was getting the minerals balanced so I guess I still have a deficiency in something?

With this “new” heart symptom I recalled a past entry in my blog about a person with a similar problem with the calcium/magnesium ratios and I remember he mentioned something about potassium. The full entry was for August 10, 2007.

As I was struggling through this irregular heart rate problem, I found that two things often helped the situation: potassium and vitamin B-5. Potassium often helped and I think the reason for this is that potassium and magnesium are antagonistic minerals. Since I was essentially suffering from too much magnesium (or too little calcium), the potassium helped because it reduced the metabolic effect of the magnesium (or assisted the metabolism of calcium). I think this is important, particularly for persons with hypothyroidism, because they need a higher calcium to magnesium ratio. A potassium deficiency could prevent the cells from getting enough calcium which is an activator in the cellular response to thyroid hormone.

I also know that technically, my potassium should be low because of my long time stressed adrenals and the link with high copper. Interestingly, there is also a link with a potassium ratio and candida.

Effects Of Copper On Other Minerals

Copper, in excess, tends to lower manganese, zinc and potassium levels.

Correction of the sodium/potassium ratio is essential to eliminate yeast problems, because this is indicative of adrenal insufficiency, induced hyper-alkalinity, an impaired immune system, and deficient hydrochloric acid and bile acid secretion.

Excessive Intake of Sweets, Fruits and Fruit Juices

The majority of copper-toxic individuals have an insatiable craving for sweets, fruit, and fruit juices. Such cravings arise from the fact that copper-toxic individuals, in general, suffer from a severe potassium deficiency. Fruit, fruit juices and vegetables are high in potassium content, and hence the craving for these foods.

Yesterday was another great day and I can really feel a difference with these new vitamins. Especially with my eyes so I think it’s the inositol that is responsible for that.

Inositol plays an important part in the health of cell membranes especially the specialized cells in the brain, bone marrow, eyes and intestines.

No vibration and no cold hands during the day either… so I think that’s the choline working.

Choline assists in controlling your weight as well as cholesterol levels, keeping cell membranes healthy and in preventing gallstones. It is also most useful in the maintenance of the nervous system, assisting memory and learning, and may help to fight infections, including hepatitis and AIDS.

Because the candida supplements are working this time round my assumption is that the minerals that I’ve been fighting with for the past months are now getting somewhat balanced.

For breakfast I had Raisin Bran, tuna sandwich for lunch, one apple and two pears for snacks. The success against the candida and the recent improvements, I’m started to feel like I’m really making some progress.

I meet by wife at her parents house and we pick up my daughter and head home. The same routine it’s been for almost a year now. We get home around 7:00 PM and as I enter the house I feel a weird pain in my upper left chest. It’s a pain I’ve had before but not since I discovered magnesium. I was panicked because I’ve been doing so well lately. I don’t go anywhere without my homeopathic magnesium so luckily I took some right away. And because I was home, I could take one 250 mg of magnesium. The pain disappeared and I was somewhat confused as to what had happened. I sat down for a bit and had a glass of water.

When I was settled, I wanted to check my iris in the mirror to see if I could see anything in the area of the heart and it looked normal. Checking my iris in the mirror is actually something I do now almost on a weekly basis. I bought a little flashlight and carry it around with me.

So why the chest pain? I’m not really sure…

Woke up with the vibration but today was a great day and it felt like I had more energy than usual. The stuff I’m taking for the candida is working this time around. When I think back, it’s almost hard to believe how bad it actually was a year ago.

I managed to pick up 250 mg of inositol and 500 mg of choline at the health food store. I take one each with my lunch and my the early afternoon, I can feel the effects. Hard to explain..it just feels different but in a nice way…and no cold hands all day.

Found some suggestions for dosage:

Inositol

Description: 500 mg/2x/day. Improves nerve function; taken with choline and biotin, some have found improvements in HIV-induced neuropathy at doses of 1000-4000 mg/day;

Choline

Description: 1000 mg/2x/day choline citrate. Improves nerve and immune function. May help reverse neuropathy, both peripheral and autonomic; higher doses may be needed, up to 1000-3000 mg of phosphatidylcholine, 3 times per day;

Biotin

Description: 10-15 mg/day. Normally produced by intestinal bacteria which are destroyed in anyone on antibiotics. Not much in food so supplementation necessary. Helps prevent candida problems. Helps metabolize fatty acids, and thus is critical for fat digestion; also necessary for amino acid metabolism. Biotin deficiency can cause dementia; shown in kidney dialysis patients on biotin-free restricted diets; such neurological problems reversed with a couple of months of biotin supps. May also help reverse neuropathy, both peripheral (cause of numbness and pain in feet, legs, hands, arms) and autonomic (contributor or cause of impotency and digestive problems). For neuropathy, works best when used in doses of 15-20 mg/day (15,000-20,000 mcg) and in combination with choline, inositol, B6, B12, and thiamine.

Entry for August 20, 2007

Today I decided to take a break from the vitamins and minerals just to see what would happen. My eyes are still itchy so maybe I’m taking too much of something. Possibly the phosphorus?

I got to around mid-morning and I could feel the mild nerve feeling in my head. I’m still low in something but I have no idea what it could be. I figure it could be the chromium so I take one capsule with my lunch. I also took 1 50 mg of zinc and left it at that. By mid afternoon, the nerve feeling returned so I took a calcium/magnesium and it never returned.

By the evening my eyes are feeling much better so I take another zinc and another calcium/magnesium with my dinner. I also wanted to try something different.

With the addition of the calcium/magnesium in the 2/1 ratio, my candida has mildly improved. It’s nothing significant, it just feels a little better than usual since I made the change. So tonight I thought I’d add some caprylic acid and a grapefruit seed extract. Two things known for candida and I’ve tried them both before without any success.

About an hour after dinner…I notice a difference. I think it’s working this time. I’ll add these two to my supplements tomorrow.

Today I’m back at work so my routine is a bit more stable. I’ve decided to take three doses of 300mg calcium/magnesium in the 1/1 ratio along with the phosphorus and vitamin D. No reason for the change just want to keep trying something different until I find something that works.

I also changed the zinc dosage from two doses of 50 mg to three doses of 30 mg. I didn’t take any niacin today as I’m still not convinced that it’s the cause of the vibration although I didn’t have any all weekend.

By the end of the work day the eyes aren’t as itchy and the stuffiness in my nose feels better than usual. I’ll keep doing this combination of minerals for sure!

The million dollar question….Will it have any effect on the vibration?

I’ve always been very confused as to why taking extra calcium would make the vibration stronger and today I still don’t have an answer. I’m wondering if the magnesium deficiency caused a high calcium ratio? What are the effects of low magnesium and the effect on calcium?

Calcium

Elevated calcium levels are associated with arthritic / joint and vascular degeneration, calcification of soft tissue, hypertension and stroke, an increase in VLDL triglycerides, gastrointestinal disturbances, mood and depressive disorders, chronic fatigue, increased alkalinity, and general mineral imbalances.

If magnesium is insufficient potassium and calcium will be lost in the urine and calcium will be deposited in the soft tissues (kidneys, arteries, joints, brain, etc.).

Calcium Synergists

Copper is required to fix calcium in the bones and helps raise the tissue calcium level. Many people have biologically unavailable copper which causes their calcium problems. In fast oxidizers, copper deficiency contributes to a calcium deficiency. Adequate adrenal hormone levels are also essential for proper calcium metabolism.

Calcium Antagonists

Sugar upsets the calcium/phosphorus ratio in the blood more than any other single factor, according to researcher Dr. Melvin Page. It also stresses the adrenal glands and upsets the hormone balance which affects calcium metabolism.

Copper Bio-Unavailability A Major Cause of Candida Infection

The most commonly observed mineral imbalance we find in many patients with Candida infection is termed bio-unavailable copper. Bio-unavailable copper is indicated on a tissue mineral test. Other mineral indicators of a candida overgrowth are an elevated calcium level, elevated calcium/magnesium ratio, or a low sodium/potassium ratio.
