Copper Bio-Unavailability A Major Cause of Candida Infection

The most commonly observed mineral imbalance we find in many patients with Candida infection is termed bio-unavailable copper. Bio-unavailable copper is indicated on a tissue mineral test by a copper level above 3.0 mg/% or below 1.0 mgs/%. Other mineral indicators of a candida overgrowth are an elevated calcium level, elevated calcium/magnesium ratio, (greater than 10/1) or a low sodium/potassium ratio (less than 2.3/1).

Bio-unavailability means there is an excess of copper stored in various tissues and organs. While in excess, it is not able to be accessed. When copper is bio-unavailable, it cannot serve its normal function as a fungicide. Copper is involved in enzymes in cellular oxidative (aerobic) metabolism, and this appears to be the reason for its anti-fungal action.

The causes of copper bio-unavailability are several, however the principal one is adrenal gland insufficiency, exhaustion or burnout. Inadequate secretion of adrenal glucocorticoid hormones prevents adequate synthesis of the major copper-binding protein, ceruloplasmin.

Adrenal exhaustion results from stress, which results in a depletion of various nutrients such as manganese, zinc, vitamin C, pantothenic acid, vitamin E, vitamin A, etc., which are vital for optimal adrenal gland activity.

Depletion of nutrients occurs due to:

-Antibiotics and other medications which deplete copper reserves

-inadequate diet, increased demand for nutrients due to stress, air pollution, illness, toxic metals, etc.,

-poor absorption and/or utilization of nutrients due to food sensitivity, inadequate digestive function, etc.

ADRENAL BURNOUT SYNDROME

Thousands of people suffer from constant fatigue, unrelieved by rest and sleep. This is the main symptom of adrenal burnout syndrome. Other symptoms may include a craving for sweets, low blood pressure and blood sugar, irritability and depression. Low energy impairs every system of the body. Secondary symptoms range from impaired digestion to infections. Toxic emotions accumulate with adrenal burnout. The world looks bad, people are evil, and a hopeless attitude is not uncommon.

The condition is also called adrenal hypofunction, exhaustion or insufficiency. Unlike fatigue, one’s energy does not return after a good night’s rest. Burnout is a more serious derangement of the bodyís energy system.

The adrenals are the major glands the body uses to respond to stress. Its hormones raise the blood sugar and blood pressure, and promote energy production. Adrenalin or epinephrine is used for emergencies. Longer-acting anti-stress adrenal hormones cortisone and cortisol. Aldosterone, another adrenal hormone, retains sodium and increases the blood pressure. Related closely to the sympathetic nervous system, the fight-or-flight response it is called. When the adrenals become depleted, the body is unable to handle stress.

Most physicians do not diagnose adrenal burnout syndrome. Rarely, if enough tests are run, it may be called Addisonís disease. This doctors consider incurable. Recovery from adrenal burnout, however, is definitely possible.

Same as yesterday: No vibration last night or this morning. There is definitely a difference and I’m beginning to think it has to do with the additional copper intake. I started to wonder if this was the reason for my weak knees? A copper deficiency effected my ligaments? I need to do more research and I come across a link between copper, candida, stressed adrenals, neurotransmitters, serotonin production, thyroid hormones, myelin sheaths and??? Mitral Valve Prolapse!

My jaw almost dropped to the ground…

COPPER

Copper is the body ís natural anti-candida agent. Farmers often spray copper sulfate on fruits and vegetables to kill yeast and molds. Water departments may add copper compounds to drinking water for the same reason. Copper may be added to swimming pools and hot tubs to control yeast. Copper favors aerobic metabolism which disables yeast.

Candida Albicans

Everyone with candida has a copper imbalance. When copper is out of balance, our bodies cannot control yeast overgrowth. This often lead to chronic candida albicans infections that are resistant to treatment.

Adrenal Glands

Most often, copper is present but not available to the body. This is due to deficiency of ceruloplasmin, a copper binding protein. Adrenal hormones are required to produce ceruloplasmin. Underactive, exhausted adrenal glands or sluggish liver activity cause a decrease in ceruloplasmin production. As a result, copper is not properly bound and is less available to the body. Until the copper-adrenal-liver condition is corrected, candida is difficult to control.

Birth control pills impair copper metabolism. Some antibiotics act by removing copper from the liver. Steroid therapy slows the adrenal glands which makes copper less available. All can cause or aggravate candida.

Nerves

Copper is critical for energy production in the cells. It is also involved in nerve conduction, connective tissue, the cardiovascular system and the immune system. Copper is closely related to estrogen metabolism, and is required for women’s fertility and to maintain pregnancy. Copper stimulates production of the neurotransmitters epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine. It is also required for monoamine oxidase, an enzyme related to serotonin production.

Copper is also important for the production of the thyroid hormone called thyroxine and is necessary for the synthesis of phospholipids found in myelin sheaths that cover and protect nerves.

Conditions

Physical conditions associated with copper imbalance include arthritis, fatigue, adrenal burnout, insomnia, scoliosis, osteoporosis, heart disease, cancer, migraine headaches, seizures, fungal and bacterial infections including yeast infection, gum disease, tooth decay, skin and hair problems and female organ conditions including uterine fibroids, endometriosis and others. Mental and emotional disorders related to copper imbalance include spaciness, depression, mood swings, fears, anxiety, phobias, panic attacks, violence, autism, schizophrenia, and attention deficit disorder. Copper deficiency is associated with aneurysms, gout, anemia and osteoporosis.

COPPER AND CONNECTIVE TISSUE

Copper is required for collagen formation. Copper deficiency is association with atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular conditions. Excess copper or biounavailable copper often cause connective tissue problems, interfering with the disulfide bonds in connective tissue. Symptoms may include stretch marks, tendon and ligament weakness, mitral valve prolapse, skin and hair problems and other conditions affecting connective tissue.

Today I tried another experiment. This acidophilus from Genestra is not working like I think it should. The package says it contains a dosage of 18 billion bacteria. Bio-K has 50 billion so I’m going to switch and take three Bio-K a day for two days to see if that will make any difference. Here’s what it says on their web site:

Bio-K+ does not contain any additives, stabilizer or added flavor. It has a very pleasant taste similar to fresh plain natural yogurt, but has 10 – 1000 times more friendly bacteria. However, you CAN add fruit, honey or sweetener to your daily portion. You can also use it in a smoothie or protein shake.

Fermented milk transports the bacteria in their natural state without any damage so they go to work immediately at consumption. This protective environment also supplies the bacteria with food and ensures at least 10 times the bioactivity of freeze-dried bacteria.

Bio-K+ is a major advancement in Lb. acidophilus technology and functional foods. It represents a giant leap from dormant freeze drier powders to super-potent live culture. It is already active and does not require reactivation in the body. This is a great benefit as powered products need reactivation and it is not know how much can or will be reactivated. Bio-K+ is a highly concentrated unique blend of a special strain of Lb. acidophilus (CL1285) and Lb. casei. It contains a minimum of 50 billion live cells per serving of 100 grams.

Last night I couldn’t feel a vibration when I went to bed and I don’t think there was any vibration when I woke up. Was it the three doses of Bio-K?

The only other thing I’ve changed is the zinc and copper supplementation at a higher dosage than the multivitamin. I know there is a relationship between copper and magnesium so I need to do some more research.

I’ll have to check again tonight and tomorrow morning.
