Mystery of the Internal Vibration

Entry for September 01, 2006

If the water has a bad smell to it, there is a very good reason. I won’t be drinking it that’s for sure…

Smelly water safe to drink

DURHAM – It may not smell the best, but the Region of Durham says the municipal water is safe to drink. The past few days residents using the municipal water supply along Lake Ontario may notice the tap water has an earthy or musty odour.

Taste and odour episodes, the Region said, are a natural phenomenon caused by seasonal biological changes in Lake Ontario and typically occur in the late summer or early fall but the water is safe to drink.

According to the Region, laboratory testing of both the raw and treated water confirms its bacteriological quality meets all drinking water quality standards set by the Province.

The treatment processes at the Region’s water supply plants in Oshawa, Whitby, Newcastle and Bowmanville are unable to remove all of these odours. The Ajax Water Supply Plant has four granular activated carbon filters to reduce taste and odour levels.

Taste and odour episodes will generally dissipate after water temperatures in the lake start to go down.
